# A marshaller's message is the movement, not the light

The wands aren't the message. The path they draw is, and it works the same in daylight with no
torches lit at all.

## What's actually printed here?

Two arm signals, traced three times each, and no aircraft, no airline colours and no ground crew
vest anywhere in the frame.

The figure stays a plain silhouette — small, low, faceless — because the point of the print is the
shape each arm draws, not a portrait of a marshaller. Both wands appear at three points along their
own swing, so the print shows a path travelled rather than a pose held, which is closer to how the
signal is actually read from above than any single frozen gesture would be.

## Why does the arm's path matter more than the light on the wand?

Because a marshalling signal is defined as a shape an arm makes, and the wand simply helps somebody
see it after dark.

The same instruction — arm extended and swept, or crossed and beckoned — is given bare-handed in
daylight and with an illuminated wand at night, and a pilot three storeys up reads the same
instruction either way. The light doesn't carry the meaning; the motion does. That's why the print
can leave the wands as bright marks on a dark ground and lose nothing — the trace of the movement is
the signal, whether or not there's a torch lit inside it.

## What makes a good print of a signal like this, rather than a busy one?

Choosing one recognisable arc and drawing it exactly, not stacking several signals into one figure.

A marshaller's vocabulary runs to a dozen or more distinct signals, and a print trying to show
several at once would read as noise rather than language. This one keeps to a single arc per arm,
repeated at three points so the motion is legible without needing an aircraft or a runway in the
frame to explain it — the figure and its own traced light carry the whole idea, the same restraint

## Can I put a real airline's colours or a real airport's marks on this?

Yes, provided you're licensed to use them — a generic marshaller and a generic apron are free to
draw either way.

An airline's livery, a specific airport's ground markings and a ground-handling company's uniform
colours belong to whoever operates them, and using them on something for sale is a licensing
conversation, the ordinary way branded material generally is. The signal itself — the arm, the wand,
the arc it travels — is a working method with no owner, taught the same way at any apron, which is
what this print draws instead.

## Does this work for a different signal, not just this one wand pattern?

Yes — the same treatment suits any instruction that has to be readable at a distance with no words.

A "hold position", a "chocks in" or a "cut engines" gesture would trace a different arc but the same
idea: a small dark figure, an illuminated path, nothing else in the frame competing for attention.

## Isn't a wordless signal too obscure to put on a shirt if you don't already know it?

No — the print doesn't need decoding to work, the way most signage doesn't.

Nobody reads a shirt the way a pilot reads an apron. The traced arcs work as a shape first; knowing
they're the correct signal for "come ahead" is what a person who's stood on an apron gets in
addition, not a requirement everyone else has to meet before the print means anything.

## Does it print well?

Yes, on a dark ground with a narrow, disciplined palette.

Near-black holds the silhouette with almost no visible outline needed, and the luminous yellow does
one job: showing where the wand's light actually falls. Used any more broadly, it stops reading as
light and starts reading as colour. Cream picks out the parts of the figure the yellow doesn't
reach. Two flat inks with hard edges survive the fabric far better than any attempt at a glow or a
gradient trail.
