# A barrel has no glue and no nails in it

> A barrel holds together on compression alone. The stave gauge is the set of figures that makes the hoops squeeze the wood into a watertight joint.

## Why does a barrel have no fasteners in it at all?

Because the joint is made by squeezing, not by fixing.

Every stave is cut with a taper along its edge, wider in the middle than at the ends. Drive the
iron hoops down over that taper and they pull the staves inward and against each other, tighter as
they go, until the whole ring locks itself under its own compression. Nothing needs to be bonded,
because the wood is being pushed into the joint rather than held there.

## What is the bilge actually doing?

Making the barrel roll instead of drag.

The stave gauge here runs HEAD 22.50in, BILGE 27.75in, CHIME 24.00in — the barrel is at its
widest in the middle, not at either end. That bulge means a full barrel meets the ground on a
curve rather than a flat face, so one person can roll it on its side and steer it by leaning it,
instead of lifting a weight nobody could carry alone.

## Which numbers does the gauge actually control?

The taper at each diameter, and nothing else.

Head, bilge and chime each carry their own taper — 0.75in, 1.25in and 0.50in — because the curve
of the barrel changes how much each stave has to lean to meet its neighbours cleanly all the way
round. Every stave in a barrel is cut to the same profile, so the same three tapers, applied to
however many staves the design calls for, are what make the circle close without a gap anywhere on
it.

### Three heights, one profile

The 29.00in, 16.75in and 3.50in run down the side of the drawing, marking the stave's full length
and the shape along it from end to end. Together with the three diameters, they're the entire
instruction set — a cooper reading this gauge could cut the stave without ever seeing the finished
barrel.

## Can I put a real cooperage's mark on it?

Not somebody else's, though the method itself is free to use.

Stave profiles and taper figures are woodworking facts, the same way
[a torque sequence is a fact rather than a brand](/stories/mechanic-garage-shirts). A named
cooperage's own stamp or a distillery's cask mark is a different thing — a document somebody
made, licensable if a real one is the point of the shirt, and if it isn't, the invented gauge is
free to be exactly this specific.

## Does this only apply to barrels for drink?

Coopering was never only about wine and whisky, though that's most of what's left of it.

Casks, tubs, churns and buckets were all built the same way before metal and plastic replaced
them. For anyone who's given someone a cask as a gift — a wedding barrel, a first cask of their
own — the gauge behind it is a real, specific object rather than a generic barrel shape, which is

## Isn't coopering basically gone now?

Mostly, but not entirely — the whisky and wine trades still keep coopers working by hand, this
week, on casks exactly this shape.

## Does it print well?

Yes — flat line and numerals, nothing that needs a gradient.

Brown for the ground and cream for the drawing keep it close to the material it's describing. The
