# The most secure channel in this world is a brick

Printed on the back, bone white on matte black, photocopied and grainy like a zine run off in a
back room. One brick, pulled halfway out of a wall, drawn large and straight on. A small wrapped
package sits in the cavity behind it. Scratched into the brick face: `51 30 26 N`, and six tally
marks beside it.

Everything about this exchange happens without a network, on purpose.

## What is a dead drop, exactly?

A way to pass something between two people who never meet and never communicate directly — one
leaves an item at a fixed physical location, the other collects it later, and nothing about the
exchange passes through a wire.

No message announces the drop is ready. No confirmation says it's been collected. The location
itself carries the entire instruction, which is why it has to be fixed and findable by exactly the
person who already knows to look — a brick, a hollow, a loose paving stone, chosen because it looks
like nothing to anyone else walking past.

Timing is the other half of the arrangement, and it's never written down anywhere on the drop
itself. Whoever placed the package and whoever collects it agreed on the schedule somewhere else
entirely, long before either of them came near this wall.

## Why is a brick more secure than anything routed through a network?

Because a network, however carefully built, produces records at every point it touches —
timestamps, addresses, the shape of who spoke to whom and when. A brick produces none of that by
default.

Nobody has to trust an intermediary, because there isn't one — the same refusal a run of stickers
pasted over a public surface makes, no channel at all between the person who left the mark and the
person who reads it, [just layers accumulating in public with nothing routing between

needed it and will still be there after, indifferent to both of them.

## What makes the grid reference and the tally marks the right details?

Because together they're the entire log, and a log this sparse is the point.

The reference fixes the place with enough precision that only someone holding the same coordinates
finds the right brick among thousands. The tally marks record nothing about content, timing, or
who — only that the drop has been used six times before, scratched by hand the same way

## Is a coordinate format like this owned by anyone?

No. A grid reference is a way of describing a place, not a piece of intellectual property — the
notation belongs to whoever needs to mark a location, the same way
[a six-figure reference works whether it's pointing at a trig point or a hollow brick](/stories/grid-reference-six-figure).

If a design depicted a specific real building or a real mapping authority's actual survey markings,
that would be a different question — a real address is identifying in a way an invented one isn't,
and that's worth thinking about before putting a real place on a shirt. This coordinate is
invented.

## Does the same drop work for exchanges that aren't secrets?

Any handoff where the two people involved would rather not coordinate directly works the same way —
a spare key left under a fixed object for a house-sitter, a note left at an agreed bench for
somebody running late, a marked spot a courier and a resident both know without either having the
other's contact details.

The tally marks scale down the same way: a private count of how many times a small, ordinary
arrangement has quietly worked. Nothing about the drawing insists on danger — the same brick, the
same six marks, could just as easily belong to two neighbours who've never bothered exchanging
numbers.

## What's the strongest objection to trusting a method this old-fashioned?

That a physical location, once discovered, is compromised permanently and can't be revoked the way
a digital channel can be shut off and replaced.

That's true, and it's the actual price of no metadata: nothing about a dead drop protects it once
somebody has watched the wall long enough. A network channel can be closed from anywhere the moment
it's suspected. A brick has to be abandoned in person, and whoever abandons it loses the location
for good, tally marks and all.

## Does it print well?

Yes, especially at this scale of detail.

Bone white on matte black keeps the photocopied contrast the drawing needs — a mid-tone ground
would soften the grain that makes it read as a duplicated zine page rather than clean art. The
brick's texture should stay a handful of solid marks rather than a fully rendered surface; too much
detail in the mortar lines fills in on fabric and the scratched text goes illegible first. One ink
is enough, provided the tally marks stay crisp enough to count by eye. Placing the whole design on
the back rather than the chest suits the subject too — a dead drop is something read by someone
walking behind you, not someone facing you head on.
