# Glitch art is damage with rules

> Real glitches come from specific machines failing in specific ways. Naming the corruption is what separates the look from generic digital noise — and the names are learnable.

Ask for "a glitch effect" and you usually get mess — scattered noise, random colour, a general
impression of brokenness. It reads as decoration because nothing in it corresponds to anything
actually breaking.

Real glitch art is the opposite of random. It's the visual signature of particular hardware and
particular file formats failing in particular ways, and those failures have names.

## What are the actual glitch types?

Three do most of the work, and they look nothing alike.

- **RGB channel shift** — the red, green and blue channels are offset from each other, producing
  red and cyan halos on either side of every edge. It's instantly readable as digital because it
  cannot happen in a camera.
- **Datamosh / block displacement** — rectangular blocks of pixels copied and moved somewhere
  else, sometimes with their own colour shift. This is what corrupted compressed video does when
  it loses a keyframe and keeps applying motion data to the wrong image.
- **Scanline displacement** — whole horizontal bands slid sideways, the signature of a corrupted
  video signal, often with thin dark lines through the image.

The portrait above uses all three, which is why it reads as a machine failing rather than as an
artist being messy.

## Why does naming them matter so much?

Because "glitchy" is a mood and these are objects, and only one of those gets rendered
faithfully.

This is the most reliable pattern across every style in this section: concrete nouns are
delivered close to one-for-one, while intensity adjectives do almost nothing. Asking for a
*heavily glitched* portrait returns a normal portrait. Asking for **horizontal bands displaced
sideways, red and cyan channel separation at every edge, three rectangular blocks relocated** —
that returns a different image.

## What makes the difference between good and bad glitch?

Restraint, and something solid underneath.

Two rules carry most of it:

- **Cluster the damage in zones.** Corruption that's evenly distributed reads as texture. A face
  that's intact except for three catastrophic bands reads as damage, because the intact part
  gives you something to measure the damage against.
- **Strong contrast and a clear silhouette underneath.** Channel splits and displaced bands are
  only visible if there are hard edges to displace. A soft, low-contrast image glitches into mud.

The underlying picture has to be worth looking at before anything is broken. Glitch is a
treatment, not a subject.

## Doesn't this need a photograph?

It works best on one, and that's the useful part for a garment.

The effect is about *mediation* — it says this image went through a machine and the machine
mishandled it. That claim only lands if the source reads as a recording. Applied to an
illustration, displaced bands just look like a stylistic choice, because a drawing never claimed
to be a capture in the first place.

Which makes this one of the better uses for a photograph of an actual person. The face stays
recognisable through the damage, and the damage is what makes it a design instead of
[a photo printed on a shirt](/stories/what-makes-a-graphic-tee-look-cheap).

## Is a glitched portrait of someone a good idea?

Of someone who agreed, yes. It's a genuinely striking way to put a real face on a garment.

Worth being straightforward about the boundary: a real person's likeness isn't yours to print
without their say-so, and that applies to public figures much more strictly than to your friend
who thinks it's funny. Damage doesn't anonymise anybody — a face is still a face at three bands
of displacement.

The version that works socially is the same one that works for

## Why does it print well?

Because the effects are hard-edged and geometric, which is what fabric prefers.

Displaced bands are rectangles. Channel separation is flat colour offset from flat colour. Block
corruption is literally squares. None of it depends on subtle gradients or fine detail, so it
survives at any size and reads from across a room — the same reason
[styles born from cheap reproduction](/stories/acid-rave-flyer-aesthetic) hold up on
garments.

The one thing to watch is that the damage doesn't leave the design with a rectangular outer edge.
Displaced blocks that stick out past the portrait's silhouette are good; a neat rectangle of
corruption is a panel.
