# Cut the strings out and the shape still reads as a guitar

## What is this, exactly?

A headstock — the part of the neck that holds the tuning pegs — reduced to a flat silhouette with
the strings taken out of it as negative space rather than added on top of it.

There's no timber grain, no finish, no visible hardware beyond the six posts. Just the outline of
the shape and six clean cuts through it where the strings would be. It's the least amount of
information a guitar can be reduced to and still be unmistakably a guitar.

## Why does a headstock's outline matter so much?

Because it's the one part of the instrument recognisable from silhouette alone, with nothing else
in frame to help.

A guitar's body shape gets copied constantly and rarely disputed — plenty of makers share close
variations. The headstock is different: its outline is often the single most distinctive thing a
manufacturer owns, distinctive enough that a small number of well-known shapes have ended up
argued over in court between makers. That's precisely why a silhouette of one is such a loaded
shape to draw — the outline alone is carrying an identity that a body shape alone usually can't.

## Why are the strings cut out instead of drawn on top?

Because drawing them on top would just be decoration, and cutting them out turns the same six lines
into the reason the shape reads as an instrument at all.

A solid mass with six gaps in it stops being an abstract silhouette and starts being unmistakably a
guitar the moment the gaps line up with where six strings would actually run — the negative space
is doing more work than any additional line could. It's a demonstration of how little an outline
needs before the eye fills in the rest: no wood, no plating, no visible tuning gears, and it still
reads instantly.

## What makes a good version of this drawing?

Keeping the outline generic rather than modelled on any specific, recognisable headstock shape.

A distinctive real headstock is exactly the kind of outline that's protected as a maker's own
identity, and a chest print built from one invites the paperwork that comes with using somebody
else's mark. A shape assembled from features common across many instruments — a straight taper, six
posts in a line — reads as "guitar" without reading as any one guitar in particular, which is a
better result on a shirt anyway, not a compromise.

## Can a real maker's headstock shape go on a shirt?

If a specific instrument is the actual point, yes — a distinctive headstock outline is a designed
identity, and identities like that get licensed constantly, by studios and manufacturers alike, to
people who want to print them.

What has no owner is the idea of a headstock, or the general technique of drawing one as a
silhouette with the strings cut out — that's a method, not a mark. A generic outline like the one
on this hero was chosen deliberately for that reason: it carries the instrument without carrying
anyone's specific, litigated design, which means there's no permission to chase for a shirt that
was never about one particular guitar to begin with.

## Does this work for anything other than a guitar?

Any headstock reads the same way — bass, mandolin, banjo, a twelve-string with six extra posts
stacked above the first six.

## Does it print well?

Very well — a solid silhouette with clean negative-space cuts is about as forgiving a print as
exists, because there's no fine internal detail to lose.

Cream on a washed black ground keeps the edge of the silhouette crisp and the string gaps reading
as true cuts rather than thin printed lines, which is the only way negative space holds up once it
meets fabric. Keep the posts and the string gaps evenly spaced — uneven spacing is the first thing
that reads as a mistake rather than a stylistic choice at this scale.
