# Hoeing is four different jobs with one name

> Four hoe blades meet their shaft at four different angles, near-flat to near-upright, and each cuts a different way — why buying the wrong one is the commonest reason people say they hate hoeing.

Four hoe blades, side on, in a row. The shafts are cut off short so the blades do the talking. The
first meets its shaft almost flat. The last stands almost upright. Between them, two more angles,
evenly spaced. Stamped into each blade: a pattern number — 12, 14, 18, 22.

They're all called a hoe. They don't do the same job.

## What is actually different between these four blades?

The angle at which the blade meets the shaft — nothing else about them needs to change for the tool
to work completely differently.

A hoe with the blade nearly in line with the shaft is worked in a push, low and flat, skimming just
under the surface. One with the blade closer to a right angle is worked in a chop, brought down
into the ground rather than dragged through it. Same handle, same rough size of blade, entirely
different motion — the angle alone decides which.

## Why does the angle change what the hoe does?

Because it sets whether the blade meets the ground edge-on for a slicing pass or face-on for a
striking one.

A near-flat blade, pushed forward at a shallow angle, runs just under the crust of the soil and
severs weeds at the root without turning anything over — fast, and it barely disturbs what's either
side. A near-upright blade can't be pushed that way; it has to be lifted and brought down, so it's
built for chopping into ground too hard or too rooted for a push to get through. Two motions, two
angles, and neither one does the other's job well.

## What makes a good hoe — the blade, or the angle it's set at?

The angle, and it's worth choosing before the blade shape, not after.

A sharp, well-made blade set at the wrong angle for the ground it's used on will still feel like
hard work, because the resistance it's fighting has nothing to do with sharpness. Matching the angle
to the job — flat for a push through loose ground between rows, upright for breaking compacted
ground — does more for how a hoe feels in the hand than blade quality does on its own.

## Who owns a pattern number stamped into a blade?

A specific number stamped by a specific toolmaker, in that maker's own numbering system, is theirs —
licensable in the ordinary way if a real manufacturer's range is the point of the shirt.

The angle itself isn't anybody's. Four blade geometries solving four different soil problems are a
mechanical fact about levers and cutting edges, not a design one company invented and the rest
copied — which is why the four here carry invented numbers rather than any real maker's catalogue.

## Does one angle work for every soil, or every crop?

No single angle covers everything a garden asks a hoe to do, which is the reason four exist rather
than one.

Loose, well-worked ground between established rows wants the near-flat blade and a push. Ground
that's compacted, or hasn't been worked yet, wants something closer to upright and a chop.

## Isn't a hoe just a hoe?

That's the assumption behind most first purchases, and it's usually the reason the tool ends up
leaning unused against a shed wall within a season.

Somebody buys one hoe, uses it for a job its angle wasn't built for, finds it slow and tiring, and
concludes hoeing itself is the problem. It's closer to
[owning one pair of secateurs for two jobs](/stories/secateur-blade-and-anvil) that actually
need different mechanisms — the tool wasn't wrong, the match between tool and task was.

## Does it print well?

Yes — four blades in strict profile, evenly spaced, read as a clear progression even before anyone's
close enough to notice the angles differ.

Keep the shafts short and identical so the angle change is the only variable the eye has to track;
lengthening them unevenly would blur the comparison. Cream on charcoal keeps four hard silhouettes
crisp, and one ink is enough — the shape of the progression is doing the work, not colour.
