# A single step teaches without a single word

## What is a single instruction step actually showing?

The difference between what's already built and what happens next, and nothing more than that.

A full instruction sheet is dozens of these in sequence, but any one step on its own has to
communicate a single change of state. Everything already assembled is drawn once, and the new
pieces sit distinct against it. There's no summary of the whole model anywhere on the page, because
a builder halfway through doesn't need one — they need to know what changes between this page and
the last.

## Why isometric, and why no words at all?

Because isometric drawing shows three faces of an object at once without perspective distortion to
correct for, and a picture doesn't need translating the way a sentence does.

Text would need reprinting for every language a set sells into. A drawing doesn't. Isometric
projection keeps every edge to scale and every angle consistent from step to step, so a builder can
hold the page next to the bricks in their hands and match shapes directly, without mentally
correcting for the foreshortening a photograph or a perspective sketch would introduce.

## What does the callout box add that the picture alone doesn't?

It turns "find the right pieces" into a countable, checkable task before the building even starts.

The main diagram shows where things go; the callout box shows what to gather first, with a count
against each shape so a builder can pull pieces from a pile and confirm the number before touching
the model. That small box does something the finished-step picture alone doesn't attempt on its
own — it separates sorting from assembly, which is the actual bottleneck for anyone facing a mixed
pile of parts for the first time.

## Why does the step need a number in the corner at all?

Because a number is what ties one drawing to a specific place in a specific build, out of however
many steps came before and after it.

Strip the number off a step diagram and it's still a correct picture of two states of a model — it
just isn't traceable to anywhere. Fourteen means this is [the fourteenth thing that
happens](/stories/numbers-as-a-design), not the eleventh or the thirtieth, and that's what
makes a step reproducible as itself rather than as a generic diagram of some brick or other.

## Can a real construction toy's instructions appear on a shirt?

A specific model's design belongs to whoever designed it, and a specific manufacturer's colours
and figure designs belong to them too — reproducing those exactly is the part that would need
permission.

The step-by-step isometric-with-callout convention itself isn't anyone's design. It's a generic
technical illustration method used across flat-pack furniture, safety cards and anything assembled
from interchangeable parts, adopted by the construction-toy trade because it already worked
elsewhere. This uses that convention — the projection, the callout box, the numbered corner — for
an invented model, in colours that belong to no manufacturer, without touching anything owned.
Nobody's real design, drawn the way real designs get drawn.

## Does the format work for anything besides interlocking bricks?

Anywhere something gets built in more than one stage — flat-pack furniture, model kits, even a
recipe broken into numbered stages — the same wordless step works.

The convention doesn't depend on the pieces being bricks. What it depends on is a step being one
clear change of state with a countable set of new parts, and that describes plenty of things people
assemble at home that has nothing to do with a toy aisle.

### Isn't a diagram with no text missing something a real instruction needs?

Not if the drawing is doing its job — the whole method exists because words are the less reliable
part of an instruction, not the missing one. A sentence describing where a piece goes has to be
read, converted in the builder's head from language into a spatial relationship, and got right the
first time. A drawing skips straight to the spatial relationship. The convention isn't a stripped
version of a fuller instruction; it's the fuller version, and text is what most instructions add
once the drawing alone wasn't trusted to work on its own.

## Does it print well?

Yes — line art with no colour fill at all is about as durable a print as fabric ever holds.

The diagram survives as a single dark ink of clean lines on a light garment — bone, oatmeal, pale
grey — with the callout box's two piece counts kept as small solid shapes rather than fine outline
detail, since outline that thin is exactly what a weave loses first. One ink reads it fine; a second
colour on the arrow or the step number is optional, in the [same limited-palette
