# The blind spot at the centre of your night vision

## Why is the centre of the print empty?

Because the centre of your night vision genuinely is — the cells that work in low light aren't
there.

Rods are the retina's low-light receptors, and they're concentrated around the periphery. The fovea,
the small patch at dead centre where daylight vision is sharpest, has no rods at all. In the dark,
that patch is a functional blind spot. The print's empty disc sits exactly where that gap sits in
you.

## Why does the shape vanish when you look straight at it?

Because looking straight at something faint in the dark moves its image onto the one part of your
retina built to fail at low light.

Turn your head toward a faint shape at night and its image lands on the fovea — the empty disc in
the print. Rods, arranged around it, would have carried the image; the fovea can't. The shape doesn't
move. Your eye moved it into the one spot equipped to lose it.

## Why is the outer stipple the densest part of the drawing?

Because that's where the rods actually are, and rods pick up a change in light faster than the cones
that handle daylight and colour.

The density at the oval's edge is standing in for that concentration. That speed is why motion at the

## Who owns a diagram of how your own eyes work?

Nobody. This is a description of ordinary human physiology, not an image anyone holds rights to.

The oval, the stipple density and the empty disc were built for this print specifically — nothing
here reproduces a textbook plate or another artist's diagram. A fact about rods and cones isn't a
work with an author; the drawing that renders it is, and this one was made for the shirt.

## Does the same failure apply to anything besides a person-shaped worry?

Yes — anything faint enough sits under the same rule, not only a figure at the edge of a room.

A pale shape on a dark path, a movement in a hedge, an animal at the treeline — all of them read the
same way in low light: visible at the edge, gone the moment you turn toward them. The mechanism

## Doesn't explaining the mechanism make the experience less real?

No — it explains why the experience is reliable, not why it's imaginary.

Knowing that rods sit at the periphery doesn't change what happens the next time something faint
moves at the edge of a dark room; the shape still vanishes when you look, because your retina still
works the same way it did before you read this. An explanation for a private experience — the kind

## Does it print well?

Yes, built from stipple rather than a soft airbrushed gradient.

A gradient this wide goes muddy on fabric fast — a genuinely soft edge just fills in grey. Stipple
holds its density in discrete dots that the weave can actually carry, so the transition from dense
edge to empty centre stays a transition rather than a smear. Black or near-black grounds with a
single pale ink for the stipple keep the empty disc reading as absence rather than as a flat white
patch.
