# Eighty triangles and a hard shadow

> Early console 3D had so few polygons that every facet showed. What was a limitation then is now a deliberate style, and it prints better than smooth rendering ever will.

A fox made of maybe eighty flat triangles, standing on a rock made of four. Every crease between
faces is visible. The shadow underneath is a hard shape, not a gradient.

Nobody chose that look. There simply weren't any more triangles available.

## Why did early 3D look like this?

Because polygons cost something, and there weren't many.

Mid-nineties console hardware could push a few hundred triangles per character, so every one was a
decision. Faces were kept flat because smooth shading cost more. Textures were tiny and stretched
over big surfaces. Shadows were a dark blob drawn on the ground because a real one was out of the
question.

Every quality that now reads as charming was originally a compromise, which is the usual story with
[styles that came out of cheap printing or cheap hardware](/stories/creature-feature-lobby-card).

## Why does it look good now?

Because faceting is honest and smoothness isn't.

A low-polygon model shows you its own construction. You can see how the shape was made, count the
faces, follow the silhouette. That legibility is why it survived as a deliberate aesthetic long
after the constraint lifted — it reads as *made* rather than as rendered.

There's also a nostalgia component, but it isn't the whole reason. Plenty of people who never
touched that hardware like the look.

## What's the difference between this and just being low-detail?

Hard creases, and a small number of large faces.

The failure mode is a smooth modern model with slightly fewer polygons — it looks soft and cheap
rather than faceted and deliberate. The real thing has visible flat planes meeting at sharp angles,
with the shading changing abruptly at every edge.

The texture matters too. Period textures were low resolution and stretched, so they blur when
enlarged. A crisp texture on a faceted model reads as modern and breaks the illusion.

## Can I make a character from a real game?

Those models and characters belong to their studios.

Game characters are among the most carefully protected designs in the industry and the recognisable
ones are heavily merchandised. That is licensable — studios license characters constantly — but it
has to be licensed before anything is printed or sold.

The technique has no owner. Faceted geometry, flat shading and a blob shadow are a rendering
approach, and pointing that approach at your own subject is where this gets interesting anyway.

## What should the subject be?

Something you'd otherwise draw, rendered as if the hardware were poor.

An animal, a car, a building, a person's dog, a bunch of flowers. The style is a transformation
rather than a subject, which makes it unusually flexible — anything can be reduced to eighty
triangles, and the reduction is the design work.

The reduction is also the interesting decision. Which features survive being flattened tells you
what a shape actually is.

## Does it suit a portrait?

Better than you'd expect, and it's the underused version.

A person's head rendered in large flat facets is legible and unnervingly warm — it reads like a
carved thing rather than a photograph. It also sidesteps the usual difficulty with
[likeness on a garment](/stories/pet-portrait-styles) by abstracting far enough to be a
depiction rather than a copy.

## Does it print well?

Very — flat facets are flat ink.

Every face is a solid colour with a hard boundary, which is close to ideal for fabric. No
gradients, no soft edges, nothing to fill in. Even the shadow is a flat shape. This is one of the
few 3D looks that needs no adaptation at all.

Dust blue, sand, sage and grey grounds all suit it. The palette can run to five or six flat colours
without any risk, because none of them are blending.
