# Two unequal tape spools are the only clock in the room

Nobody needs to be told which spool is playing and which is waiting. The shape of the reel says it
from across the room.

## What is this print actually showing?

A tape machine mid-playback, caught at the exact moment its two spools have become visibly unequal.

A reel of tape starts entirely on one spool and, over the course of playing or recording, transfers
itself to the other — the supply side thins while the take-up side thickens. Drawn dead-on with one
spool nearly full and the other nearly empty, the print isn't showing a machine at rest, it's
showing a machine partway through doing its one job, with the evidence of how far it's got sitting
in plain sight on the two hubs, in the way

without ever announcing it.

## Why does the visible difference between the spools matter so much?

Because it's a working clock that needs no display and no power to read.

[A cassette hides the same thing behind a shell window](/stories/cassette-shell-cutaway); a digital file hides it behind a progress bar
that only exists while something is drawing it. An open reel puts the same information directly on
the two spools, visible from across a room, readable by anybody who's ever watched tape run — which
side is fat tells you how much has played without asking the machine anything. It's the one format
where how far in you are is a property of the physical object rather than a number generated to
answer the question.

## Should the spools be drawn full, empty, or partway through?

Partway — a reel drawn either fully full or fully empty stops being a clock and goes back to being a stationary object.

Two evenly matched spools would be the moment right after loading, before anything has happened; one
spool empty and the other full would be the moment right at the very end. Neither tells a story on
its own. It's the visible inequality, enough transferred that the difference reads instantly, not so
much that one side has vanished, that turns the drawing from here is a tape machine into here is a
tape machine in the middle of something.

## What does HALF TRACK actually mean?

It describes how much of the tape's width carries one pass of the recording.

A reel of tape has width as well as length, and a machine can use all of it for one signal running
one direction, or split it into two strips running the same direction, or split it into two strips
running opposite directions so the reel can be flipped over and played the other way. Half track
uses half the width per pass, which is why a reel can hold two separate recordings, one under the
other, and why the label sits directly under the head block — it's a fact about how the heads are
reading the tape in front of them, not about the machine as a whole.

## Can a real tape machine's model name go on the shirt?

A specific manufacturer's badge and deck layout are licensable, the ordinary way, if a real machine is the point.

The mechanism drawn here, two spools, three guides, a head block, is common to every open-reel
machine ever built, and nobody owns the layout of a tape path any more than they own the idea of a
wheel — the same reasoning behind

What a manufacturer does own is their own casing, their own control layout and their own printed
name on the front panel. Left generic, the print stays what it looks like: a specific reel caught at
a specific moment, not a catalogue photograph of somebody else's machine.

## Doesn't a reel of tape only mean something to somebody who's actually used one?

To read the exact moment shown, yes, but the basic shape reads without any of that history.

Two circles, unequal, connected by a line, is a legible idea even to somebody who has never threaded
tape in their life — it looks like a clock, or an hourglass turned on its side, before it looks like
anything specific to recording. What the format adds, for anyone who has actually watched a reel run
down, is the specific memory of judging how much time was left in a session by eye, which digital
transport bars removed by making the number always visible and never worth learning to read.

## Does it print well?

Yes — two circles and a small number of straight and curved lines are close to ideal chest artwork.

The tape itself wants to stay a clean, unbroken line rather than showing the texture of wound
layers, which is fine detail that fills in on fabric long before the spools do. Charcoal and rust
against warm cream keep the two spool states, full and thinning, visually distinct at a glance,
which is the entire point of drawing them unequal in the first place.
