# A splice this good disappears the moment it's finished

An eye splice, opened up and laid flat instead of finished. Three strands, separated, each tucking
under the next in turn. Thin leader lines run out to each tuck, numbered 1, 2 and 3.

A splice this good disappears the moment it's finished. This print is the only version anyone
sees it taken apart.

## Why does the splice look like it's been taken apart?

Because that's the only way to show something built to vanish once the work is done.

Finished, an eye splice is a smooth loop with no obvious start or end — the join is buried inside
the rope's own strands, and a good one doesn't announce itself. Cutting it open along its length,
the way this print does, is the only way to show what's actually happening: three strands lifted
out of the lay, laid over each other, and worked back in one at a time. It's a diagram of a thing
that has no visible working parts once it exists.

## Why is a splice stronger than a knot?

Because the load runs through the tucks instead of concentrating at one sharp bend.

A knot works by bending rope hard around itself, and that bend is where the strain gathers — rope
tied around a tight radius loses a share of its rated strength right there, at the bend, every
time. A splice doesn't bend the rope that sharply. It unlays the strands and buries them back into
the rope's own structure, so the pull is shared out across several tucks instead of stacking up at
one point. A splice holds close to what the straight rope could hold on its own.

## Why three tucks, and why number them?

Because the sequence is the whole instruction, and each tuck only works once the one before it is
in place.

The first tuck sets the strand against the lay and locks the eye's size. The second and third
repeat the same over-and-under, alternating, so each strand buries deeper and can't work loose
under load the way a single tuck could. Numbering them the way this print does is doing the job a
paragraph of instruction would otherwise have to do, the same job [eight knots tied in the same

needed.

## What decides whether this reads as a splice or just a tangle of rope?

The strand separation, mostly — how clearly each of the three stays distinct through the whole
length of the cutaway.

Blur the three together and the print stops being an explanation and becomes a picture of rope,
which is a different and much less interesting shirt. Rope thickness matters too: a diagram this
legible wants a rope thick enough that a strand reads as a strand rather than a thread, which is
also why the print sits laid out flat and horizontal rather than coiled — coiled, the tucks would
overlap each other and the sequence would be lost.

## Can I put a real rigger's or ropemaker's mark on this?

The splice itself, yes without asking anybody — the method belongs to nobody, the same way
[a repaired net's mesh](/stories/net-mending-needle) belongs to nobody.

What's somebody's property is a specific business's version of it — a named rigging loft's
diagram, a particular ropemaker's house style, their name lettered across the top. If a real one
is the point, the permission is part of the job, the same as licensing anybody else's document. If
it isn't the point, the invented version is usually the better shirt anyway: it can show the exact
splice a specific rope needed rather than a stranger's.

## Does the cutaway idea work for something other than sailing rope?

Yes — anywhere a repair sits buried inside the material rather than on top of it.

A climber who's spliced their own static line, a rigger, anyone who's spent an evening working a
back splice into a dock line by hand has the same thing to show for it: a join nobody would notice
unless it were opened up for them. It works as well as a gift for somebody retiring from rope work
as it does for somebody just starting to learn it.

## Isn't a cutaway diagram too technical to actually want on a shirt?

Only if the reader doesn't already know what they're looking at — and the people who do are
exactly who this is for.

A splice this legible reads as decoration to nobody and as a fact to anybody who's tied one. That's
not a flaw to work around; it's the same trade-off [a torque figure only means something to
somebody who's felt the click](/stories/mechanic-garage-shirts) — this is a shirt for people
who already know what a tuck is, not an introduction to one.

## Does it print well?

Yes, if the three strands stay flat colour with a hard edge between them.

Charcoal against bone gives the rope its shape without any shading, and the leader lines and
numbers want setting bold enough to survive the weave — [fine detail this size fills in if it's

the numbers and lines, charcoal for the rope, and nothing else: two inks keep the sequence readable
at chest size.
