# The small size is the real print test

That's not a coincidence of the photograph. It's how the print is specified, and it's the reason
the design only needs checking once.

## Why does the same design look the same size on every garment?

Because it's set as a proportion of the chest, not as a fixed number of centimetres.

A size run steps the chest measurement up evenly from the smallest size to the largest. A print
sized as a share of that keeps the same visual relationship to the body all the way along — the
drawing doesn't get relatively bigger or smaller as the size changes, the garment underneath it
does.

## So which size is the one to actually worry about?

The smallest one, and only the smallest one.

If a design survives at the smallest size, it survives everywhere above it — there's more room at
every larger size, never less. The reverse isn't true. A detail that reads cleanly on the largest
chest can close up or vanish on the smallest one, because the same proportion is a smaller number
of actual centimetres to work with.

## What kind of design fails first at the small end?

Fine linework and the gaps between shapes.

Two lines that sit comfortably apart on the largest size can touch on the smallest one, because the
absolute distance between them shrinks with the garment even though the proportion doesn't. That's

it just shows up hardest at the small end of a size run rather than at one fixed size.

## Does the large end of the run ever cause a problem?

No — it's the easy half.

Nothing about scaling something up makes it fail. A silhouette with clean gaps has, if anything,
more breathing room on a bigger chest. The large sizes have never been where a design comes apart;
getting there is a straightforward multiplication of something that already works.

## What should I actually look at before deciding a design is finished?

The smallest size, at full resolution, not a thumbnail.

Small on a screen and small on the smallest shirt are two different kinds of small — a thumbnail
hides exactly the thin strokes and closed gaps that the smallest chest exposes. That gap between how a
design looks on a screen and how it prints is also what separates a considered graphic from

## Does the design need to be redrawn for each size?

No. One piece of artwork, one proportion, and the scaling is handled for you.

You're not producing six versions of a drawing — it's drawn once and fitted into the same share of
the chest at every size. The only decision on your side is whether that single drawing still works
when it's small, which is exactly why checking the smallest size first saves a redraw rather than
causing one.
