# Twelve invented boxes describe a sea with no edges

## What are these twelve boxes, and why does the sea look like it's been ruled with a straight edge?

Because the boundaries aren't a description of the water — they're a filing system built on top of
it.

A shipping forecast has to be read aloud, in order, to somebody who can't see a chart and might not
be able to see anything at all. Twelve fixed areas with names and a fixed sequence solve that
problem: a listener learns the order once and can then place any area mentioned relative to the
ones either side of it, without ever needing the coastline that isn't there. The straight edges are
administrative, not oceanographic, and that's exactly the feature.

## Why does drawing invented rectangles over real water actually work?

Because the areas only have to be consistent, not accurate to the seabed.

A boundary that runs perfectly straight for a long distance isn't marking a ridge or a current —
it's marking the edge of somebody's jurisdiction to broadcast about, agreed once and then never
redrawn. The sea inside FASTNET REACH doesn't know it's been named that. What matters is that
everybody using the forecast draws the same box in the same place, every time, so a warning issued
for one area means the same patch of water to every listener at once — the same trust a printed

## What's the actual judgement call in choosing which area to put on a shirt?

Whether to pick one area alone or show the full ring of twelve.

A single named box with nothing around it reads as a fragment — accurate, but missing the thing
that makes the format work, which is its place in a sequence. The full ring shown here is a design
choice about completeness: this is not a map of one sea area, it's a map of the entire method for
describing a coastline you can't see.

## Can a real shipping forecast's actual area names go on a shirt?

The area system as a method belongs to nobody. A specific broadcaster's exact area names and their
associated identity are a different question.

Dividing a coastline into named boxes for broadcast is a technique, not a proprietary work — nobody
owns the fact that weather can be read out in a fixed order. A named forecast service's specific
area boundaries and on-air branding are theirs if a real broadcast is the point, and licensing that
is straightforward. The invented names here — Dogger Shoal, Hebrid Bank, Thames Bar — do the same
job without it, and an invented sea is, in a small way, the wearer's own.

## Does a set of sea areas work for something smaller than an ocean?

The same logic runs down to any body of water that needs describing to somebody who isn't looking
at it — a lake divided into named bays for a rowing club, a stretch of coast broken into surf spots
with their own names known only locally.

What all of them share is the underlying problem: a listener at a distance from the water needs a

## Isn't a set of invented boxes just decoration dressed up as a real forecast?

No — the value isn't in whether the names are real, it's in whether the system built from them
actually functions.

forecast moves through a coastline without a single true name on the shirt. The names carry the
sequence; the sequence is the invention worth keeping, whether the labels attached to it are real
or made up for this one design.

## Does a sea-area map print well?

Yes — flat navy and a small number of cream lines is about as simple as artwork gets, provided the
boundaries stay perfectly straight.

A boundary drawn with the slightest curve reads as a coastline the map is trying and failing to
show, which undercuts the whole point. Keep the twelve names in one consistent size rather than
scaling the busier ones down to fit — a crowded label is more honest to the format than a shrunk
