# Fourteen levers, painted by what they do

> In a signal box, lever colour says signal, point or lock before you've worked out the layout — and the frame physically stops the wrong one moving.

Fourteen levers stand in a row, seen straight on. Most of them are back; four are pulled forward.
Each one is painted red, black or blue depending on what it does, and a small enamel plate above
each reads its number, 1 to 14.

That's not decoration. It's the state of the frame at one particular moment, in a language you can
read before you know the layout underneath it.

## Why is each lever a different colour?

Because a signaller reading the frame at speed needs to know what a lever does before they know
what it's for.

Colour by function is one of the oldest working conventions the railway kept: a signal lever is
one colour, a point lever another, and a lever that locks two others together — so neither can move
without the third being in the right position — a third again. Stand at the end of a fourteen-lever
frame and the colours read left to right: the mix of signals and points in front of you, before
you've traced a single wire underneath.

## How does the frame stop you pulling the wrong lever?

Mechanically, not by instruction.

Underneath the levers sits an interlocking mechanism — a plate cut with slots for every legal
combination — and a lever moves only as far as its own slot allows. A signal can't come off
protecting a route until the points that route depends on are proved and locked in position. The
rule isn't posted on a card for the signaller to remember; it's built into the steel. A wrong move
isn't forbidden here so much as unavailable.

That's a different kind of safety from a warning sign or a checklist step. A checklist trusts
somebody to read it and act on it correctly, every time, under whatever pressure a busy morning
brings. A locking plate doesn't trust anybody; it just declines to let the lever travel.

## What does a good signal box print actually show?

A believable mixture — most levers back, a few pulled — rather than a clean row of either.

A frame with every lever back looks unused, and a frame with every lever pulled looks like a
reference diagram rather than a shift in progress. Four forward out of fourteen reads as a real
moment: a route set, a train through, most of the layout resting either side of it. The number
plates matter for the same reason — without them the levers are just coloured stripes, and with
them the row becomes one specific frame rather than levers in general.

## Who owns the design of a lever frame?

Nobody in particular, and a genuinely original working method like this one is licensable the
ordinary way where a specific one is actually wanted.

The colour convention and the mechanical logic of interlocking belong to the railway trade rather

A specific historic box, named and located on a real diagram, is a different matter, and licensing
that particular record is part of the job if the real box is the point. Fourteen generic levers,
numbered and coloured by convention, belong to nobody.

## Does this work for a smaller frame, or a different kind of panel?

Yes — the drawing scales with the row it's built from.

A branch-line box might run to six or eight levers rather than fourteen; a panel signaller's own
desk swaps levers for buttons, and the same interlocking logic still sits underneath even though
there's nothing standing up to draw. A lever frame works as a print because it's a function made

Both turn a working system into something you can read at a glance, which is a rarer property in
machinery than it sounds.

## Isn't a row of levers just abstract stripes to anyone who's never seen a signal box?

It reads as a rhythm first, and a mechanism once you look closer — both readings are true at once.

Somebody who has never set foot in a box still sees a pattern: mostly back, a few forward, numbered
in sequence, which is what makes it a picture rather than a diagram. Knowing the colour convention
is a second layer for the reader who already has it, not a requirement for the first one, close to

## Does it print well?

Yes — fourteen vertical strokes and small round plates are a shape that survives reduction to
fabric without losing the count.

Cream carries the frame against forest green, and two extra inks — red and black — are enough to
separate the lever colours from each other without a third body colour. Keep the plates small and
legible rather than decorative; a number that blurs into a dot at print size loses the one detail
that turns the row into a specific frame rather than levers in general. The verticals themselves
are forgiving at any size, since a straight line survives reduction better than almost any other
shape a print can carry.
