# A modular synth has no sound until something is plugged in

> A patch cord grid has no default setting — the sockets are a vocabulary and the cords are the sentence a player writes across them, differently, every time.

Eleven patch cords arc between them in three colours, crossing wherever they cross, none of them
running past the edge of the print.

The grid is fixed and identical on every unit that was ever built. The arcs are not, and the arcs
are the whole instrument.

## What is a patch panel actually showing?

The inputs and outputs of a set of modules, unconnected.

A modular synthesiser is built from separate units — an oscillator, a filter, an envelope, a
sequencer — each with its own jacks, and none of them talking to any other until a cord joins two
of them. The grid printed here is that starting condition: every socket present, nothing wired.
It's closer to a blank keyboard than to a finished piece of music.

## Why does it look like a web rather than a wiring diagram?

Because the routing isn't fixed enough to diagram.

A wiring diagram shows one correct path. A patch is one of many workable paths chosen for that
session, which is why the cords cross rather than run in tidy parallel lines — there's no reason
for two cords serving different modules to avoid each other, and no manual telling them not to.
Unplug one cord and the sound changes rather than fails, because there was no default sound behind
it to fall back to.

## Does the patch on the shirt have to be a real, working one?

No, and it usually shouldn't be copied off a real player's rig for the print.

What makes a good patch is the shape it makes on a chest-sized panel: enough cords to read as
deliberate, not so many that the grid disappears under them, and a colour count that separates the
signal paths visually rather than by function only a synthesist would know. Eleven cords across
three colours does that — dense enough to look like work, sparse enough that individual arcs are
still traceable.

## Can a real synthesiser's front panel go on the shirt?

The idea of a patchable grid belongs to nobody. A specific manufacturer's panel layout does.

A jack, a knob and a socket grid are generic parts with generic functions, the same way a keyboard
is. What a synth maker owns is the particular arrangement, the labelling and the badge on their own
unit — a designed identity, licensable the way any manufacturer's front panel is. Left generic, as
this one is, the print stays what it looks like: a patchable system, not a specific product.

## Does this work for an instrument other than a synth?

Anything patched by hand rather than wired permanently works the same way.

A modular synth is the clearest version because the sockets are visible and unlabelled function is
the whole point, but the same idea — a system with no fixed state until somebody commits to a
routing — applies to any rig built from separable modules. It travels less well onto something with
one correct wiring, which is closer to what

## Won't this look like a mess of wires to someone who doesn't play synths?

It will read as complexity either way, and that's not a flaw to correct.

A grid with nothing plugged into it looks empty; a grid with cords crossing looks like a decision
was made. Nobody needs to know what any individual cord is routing for the print to read as
deliberate work rather than tangle — the same distinction that separates
[a pedal board's numbered signal chain](/stories/pedal-board-plan) from a box of loose
effects pedals on a floor.

## Does it print well?

Yes — flat colour with a hard edge is exactly what cord and socket artwork wants.

Purple as the base keeps the panel dark enough for cream, lime and orange to sit clearly on top of
it without a gradient anywhere; a synth patch has no soft edges in real life either. Keep the cord
count and colour count fixed once chosen — adding a fourth colour to distinguish more signal paths
starts to compete with [the twenty-four evenly lit channels of a fader bank](/stories/mixing-desk-fader-bank)
rather than reading as one clean patch.
