# The adapter is the only part you actually own

The two ends were never going to meet on their own. Somebody made sure of that, and somebody else
made sure it worked anyway.

## What is actually being drawn here?

A splice, not a charger — the block in the middle isn't part of either plug's design.

The cable runs from a slim, lightly-drawn augment connector at one end to a household wall plug at
the other, and the artwork draws that difference in weight as much as in shape: the augment end is
thin, pale linework, the wall end is heavy and dark, and the mismatch reads before you've worked out
why. The adapter block sitting between them is bound with tape, wrapped enough times that it's
clearly not a factory part. It's the piece somebody built because the two ends the world gave them
didn't fit.

## Why doesn't the plug just fit the socket?

Because the two things were made to be sold, not to be compatible, and [a compatibility chart is
already the paperwork version of that same decision](/stories/augment-compatibility-chart).

An augment maker has no reason to build a plug that fits a wall socket some other company designed
for household current. Standardising the two would cost someone a licensing fee and save the
customer a workaround. The customer's workaround costs nothing but tape and an evening, so the tape
wins. The adapter block is what a shape mismatch looks like once the two companies who could have
solved it have both decided it isn't their problem.

## Why does the handwritten label matter more than the wiring?

Because `DON'T UNPLUG — CHARGING` is the one line on the whole print written by the person who lives
there, and everything else is manufactured.

The cable, the plug shapes, the adapter's rough geometry — all of that is inherited, built by
companies whose names never appear. The tape label is the opposite: hand-lettered, blunt, aimed at
whoever else uses this kitchen. It's a note left for a housemate, not a warning printed by a factory,
and it's the only sentence on the shirt that was actually written by someone in the room.

## What makes a taped fix like this a good one, rather than a mess?

Precision in the bind, looseness in everything around it.

The tape on the adapter block is wound in clean, even passes — however improvised the object is,
whoever made it cared whether it held. That's the detail worth getting right in a design like this:
a scribbled, chaotic bind reads as neglect, and a fix that's actually going to survive a few months
on a kitchen counter looks deliberate even when it's made from whatever was in the drawer. [A

someone decided this, rather than someone gave up.

## Does a design like this only work for a charging cable?

No — any two systems built by companies with no reason to agree produce the same taped joint
somewhere in a house.

A garden hose to a tap with the wrong thread, a set of headphones adapted to a jack nobody uses
anymore, a filter cut down to fit a machine it wasn't sold with. The shirt could be built around any
of them. What makes the cable the sharpest version is that it's charging something the household
actually needs working by morning, so the fix isn't decorative — it's load-bearing every single
night.

## Isn't drawing an invented company's hardware just describing a real design problem?

Yes, and describing it doesn't require anyone's actual plug shape or logo.

The connector geometry, the adapter's proportions, the socket style — all invented for this shirt,
which is the difference that matters. A real manufacturer's plug design or a real utility's socket
standard belongs to them; a shape drawn to suggest the same mismatch, with nobody's actual part
number on it, doesn't need anyone's permission because it isn't borrowing anyone's actual object.

## Does it print well?

Yes — a ballpoint-on-notebook-paper drawing is already built for one ink and hard lines, which is
exactly what survives fabric best.

The ruled lines and the cable's cross-hatched shading are both fine linework, and fine linework
holds up because it's line rather than tone — [a flat, confident mark reproduces where a soft
gradient goes muddy](/stories/limited-palette-prints-better). The one accent, a rust orange
for the ruled margin and the socket's live terminal, is there to be spotted rather than to carry
detail, so it stays a clean flat fill rather than a shaded highlight.

Eggshell, oat or a pale stone ground suit the paper conceit closely. Two inks cover it: charcoal for
the ballpoint linework, and the one rust orange for the margin rule and the plug accent.
