One personal cassette player, straight on and large, its battery door open and hanging. Two AA cells
sit beside it — one clean, one bulged and corroded at the terminal — with the spring contacts inside
drawn precisely. Nothing on the player is labelled.

The music slowed down and dropped in pitch a full minute before it actually stopped.

## Why does the sound change before the player gives out?

Because a motor running on failing batteries doesn't stop cleanly — it just slows.

A cassette motor needs a steady voltage to hold its speed, and as two AA cells discharge that
voltage drifts downward gradually rather than cutting off. The tape keeps moving, just slower, and
the pitch drops with it — a familiar record turning warped and dragging, a voice slurring, before the
whole thing finally grinds to a stop. That falling pitch is the actual warning. Nothing else about
the player tells you the batteries are going until the sound itself does.

## Why is the open battery door the centre of the drawing?

Because it's the moment somebody stopped listening and started diagnosing.

The tape was playing, then it wasn't, and the door being pried open is the single action that
follows — checking, not enjoying. Drawing it open and hanging, rather than closed, puts the design at
that exact interruption rather than at either side of it. It's a picture of troubleshooting, not of
music.

## What's the difference between the two cells?

One kept working. One is the reason the music stopped.

The clean cell still holds a full, even shape; the corroded one has bulged and left a crust at its
terminal, the residue of having been drained and left too long. Neither cell did anything wrong — the
pair simply ran down at different rates, and one gave out first. The corrosion is what makes the

The two small spring contacts inside the battery bay are drawn exactly, not simplified into a

## Is this the opposite of a tape that just stayed in one place for years?

Close to it. One is listening on the move; the other is listening that never moved at all.

## Do I need permission to print a design like this?

No — a plain personal cassette player and two AA cells are generic objects, not a brand's design.

A specific manufacturer's casing, printed logo or model name would be theirs to license, same as any
product design. Leaving every marking on the player as a plain unmarked shape sidesteps that question
entirely while still reading instantly as the real thing to anyone who's owned one.

## Does it print well?

Yes — the flat player body and two simply shaded cells are well within what fabric can reproduce.

The corrosion on the failed cell needs to stay a small deliberate mark rather than a soft smudge, or it
loses the read at fabric's resolution, and the spring contacts want clean thin lines rather than filled
shapes. Olive with one darker ink and a contrasting fleck keeps it legible as one object at a glance.
