# A cartridge that only worked at one exact angle

> One household discovered the specific tilt a cartridge needed to seat properly, a technique nobody wrote down and nobody outside the house could learn from a description.

One cartridge, drawn three times in the same flat technical style. Square and flush. Lifted at the

Nobody in that house ever explained the motion out loud. Everybody in it could do it without
thinking.

## Why draw the same cartridge three times instead of once?

Because the object at rest tells you nothing — the technique only exists in the movement between
positions, and a single drawing can't hold movement.

A cartridge sitting square in its slot looks identical whether it's about to work or about to sit
there doing nothing. What actually mattered was the sequence: how far to lift one edge, how much to
press down, at what angle the tilt had to land before the connector made contact. Three positions
plus the arrows between them is the smallest number of drawings that can show a procedure rather
than an object.

## Why does dust only appear in the first drawing?

Because the dust is the diagnosis, and once it's been read, it's gone from the story.

The first position is square and flush — the way anyone unfamiliar with this particular cartridge
would try it first, and the way it would have worked with a clean connector. The dust along that
edge is the reason it didn't: enough grime in the contacts to break the connection at a straight
seating. The second and third drawings are the household's actual answer to that dust, arrived at
by trial rather than by cleaning anything. Nobody wiped the contacts. They found an angle instead.

## What do the arrows actually show?

The order and the direction of the motion, which is the entire content of a technique like this.

Remove the arrows and the three cartridges become three unrelated illustrations of the same object
at different tilts — no sequence, no procedure, nothing to learn from. The arrows are what turn
three static positions into one continuous action: lift here, press there, land at this angle. A
technical illustration lives or dies on whether the connecting marks are legible, and here they're
doing more work than the cartridges themselves.

## Is this the same as a repair?

No — nothing about this cartridge or the machine it went into was broken, and nothing was fixed.

A repair changes an object so a standard action works on it again. This is the opposite: the object
stayed exactly as it was, dust and all, and a household developed a nonstandard action that worked
around it instead. It sits closer to

than to any repair — a workaround that outlasted the reason for it and eventually just became how
the thing was done.

## Who owns the shape of a cartridge and its slot?

The cartridge's casing, its printed label and whatever's stored inside it belong to whoever made
and published it, the same as any other piece of hardware — and that's licensable, the way any
manufacturer's product shape is.

What's being drawn here carries none of that: no label, no printed markings, nothing that
identifies a specific title or a specific machine. It's a generic cartridge shape shown at three
angles with a scatter of dust, which describes a technique rather than a product. There's nothing
in the image that belongs to anyone but the household that worked the angle out.

## Does the technique only work for cartridges?

No — any object with one specific, undocumented way of making it function properly runs the same
way: a starter cord pulled at one particular length, a window that only shuts if you lift it first,
a plug that has to go in slightly skewed.

What makes it worth drawing is that the knowledge lived in a hand and nowhere else — not written on
a label, not in an instruction sheet, passed on only by somebody demonstrating it. A television

usually has three or four of these buried in it at once, each one somebody's private procedure for
getting one specific plug to work. It's a different record from

— that mark builds up on its own, without anyone deciding anything. This one is a decision, made
fresh every time the cartridge goes in.

## Does it print well?

Keep the dust as a scatter of small marks rather than a shaded patch — shading blurs into the
weave at print size, while discrete dots stay countable and legible. The arrows want to stay thin
and confident rather than thick; a heavy arrow starts to compete with the cartridge itself for
attention, and the sequence is the point.

Sand, warm grey or a pale stone ground all suit the flat technical-drawing look. One ink is enough
for the whole composition.
