# The fix a household chose over replacing it

One CD player's disc tray, straight on from the front, extended and stuck part way with a disc still
sitting in it. `OPEN / CLOSE` is printed small along the tray's front edge. A folded scrap of card is
wedged into the gap at one side, holding the tray exactly where it stopped.

The player still had a job. The household just changed what doing that job required.

## Why is the tray drawn stuck, rather than open or shut?

Because that half-position is the actual, ongoing state of the machine, not a moment passing through.

A tray that opens and closes properly has two states worth drawing: open, shut. This one has a third,
stable state that isn't supposed to exist — jammed somewhere in between, held there by something that
isn't the mechanism. Drawing it at either extreme would describe a working player. The half-open tray
with the card wedged in is the only accurate picture of what the object had actually become.

## Why does the folded card matter more than the tray it's fixing?

Because it's the one part of the object nobody manufactured.

Everything else on the player — the housing, the disc, even the legend printed on the tray's edge —
came out of a factory. The card was folded by hand, sized by trial, and wedged into a gap it was
never designed to fit. It's a repair made by someone with no access to the actual part and no plan to
buy a new player over it, which makes it the single most personal object in the whole drawing.

## What does OPEN / CLOSE mean once the button behind it stopped doing either?

It becomes a label for a function the machine can no longer perform on its own.

The legend was printed for a tray that worked — two states, two words, a straightforward promise.
Once the mechanism fails and a wedge of card is doing the actual holding, the words stay exactly
where they were, now describing something the household does by hand instead of something the player
does for itself. The disc sitting in the stuck tray carries no title, no printed face, just flat
colour — the design is about the tray, not the record.

## Why does the household fix it with card instead of replacing the player?

Because a stuck tray on a machine that still plays perfectly well is a minor cost, and a new player
is a bigger one.

Nobody decides in one sitting to keep a broken machine going indefinitely — it happens one repair at
a time, each one cheap enough to be worth it over buying something new. The card wedge is the visible
evidence of that ongoing calculation, made and remade every time somebody loads a disc the two-handed
way instead of the one-handed way the machine was built for.

## How does this compare to a portable player losing power on its own?

One machine fails and gets carried around; this one fails and stays exactly where it is.

## Is a jammed tray the same kind of damage as a tape that got physically chewed?

No — the tray's mechanism failed; the disc inside it is untouched.

listening to — the disc plays exactly as it always did once the card gets the tray to hold. The

## Does this belong with a sleeve a household marked up together?

Both are places where more than one person in the house made a small, permanent adjustment to a
shared object.

## Do I need permission to print a CD player like this?

No — a plain, unbranded disc tray with a generic legend is a common object, not a specific product.

The exact casing, printed logo or model markings of a real CD player belong to whichever manufacturer
made it, licensable the same as any product design. A tray carrying nothing but the generic `OPEN /
CLOSE` legend is something anyone who's owned a CD player would recognise, without naming any
particular one.

## Does it print well?

Yes — a flat grey tray, one disc and a small folded card are simple, high-contrast shapes.

The card wedge needs to stay a distinct, slightly irregular shape rather than a clean rectangle, or
it reads as part of the machine instead of a repair. The `OPEN / CLOSE` legend can go small since
it's short, blocky type. Pale grey with a single darker ink for the tray and housing keeps the print
calm enough that the card wedge is the thing your eye actually lands on.
