# Every well is settled except the one in the middle

## What does a mixing tray look like right before a large piece starts?

Mostly settled, with one deliberate exception — the well that's about to cover the most ground.

The smaller wells around the edge are done: mixed once, left to sit, ready when they're needed
for detail or accent. The centre well is still active, because it's the shade the largest area of
the piece will actually be laid in, and getting it wrong there costs far more than getting a small
well wrong.

## Why does the centre well stay wet while the others don't?

Because the smaller wells commit to a small amount of surface, and the centre well is about to
commit to nearly all of it.

A shade that's slightly off in a small accent barely registers. The same shade laid across the
bulk of a large piece is the piece, so it gets adjusted last, right up to the moment it goes down,
rather than mixed early and trusted. The stick still resting across it, mid-stir, is the visible
evidence of that — the smaller wells never needed a second pass.

## What decides which colour gets mixed ahead and which gets held for last?

How much of the finished piece that colour will actually cover.

Small wells are for whatever plays a supporting role — outline touches, small fills, a shade used
in one corner. The one held wet and central is whichever shade carries the largest single field of
the design, because that's the one where a small error multiplies across the most surface.

## Who owns a tray of mixed ink?

Nobody — a set of matched shades in a tray isn't a drawing, and mixing to a particular red or
ochre isn't the kind of thing that has an owner.

What would need permission is a specific artist's finished piece once it's actually applied — the
tray itself is preparation, not the work. This print is drawn to show that preparatory moment
rather than to reproduce anyone's particular palette or piece.

## Does the same discipline show up outside a tattoo tray?

Yes — any craft that commits paint, ink or dye to a large surface does this: a muralist testing a
base colour in a cup before rolling the whole wall, a dyer holding one vat back while smaller test
swatches dry, a painter mixing a background last because it covers the most canvas.

What a mixing tray has that a paint cup doesn't is the visible contrast on one surface — settled
wells next to one still-wet well, in the same shot, rather than a before-and-after told across two

## Isn't mixing everything ahead of time just more organised?

Not for the shade that covers the most ground — mixing that one early just moves the risk earlier
without removing it.

Pre-mixing the small wells works because getting one slightly wrong costs little. The centre well
is the opposite case: it's cheaper to keep adjusting a wet mix right up to the start than to commit
early and discover the shade is wrong once it's already covering most of the piece.

## Does it print well?

Three inks — dense black, deep red and ochre yellow — on a plum ground, each well kept as a flat,
hard-edged fill with the mixed-ink texture rendered inside its own boundary rather than bleeding
across the tray. [Fine textural detail like a stirred surface has to be drawn coarser than the
original to survive the weave](/stories/bold-shapes-survive-fabric); the wet gloss on the
centre well reads clearest as a simplified highlight, not a literal reflection.

The falling drop is the one small detail worth keeping distinct — a single mark, not softened into
the well beneath it, is what sells the idea that the centre is still in motion.
