# A pale cross and one grey button

> Two identical controllers stop being identical after a year of one hand's habits — a pale d-pad, one worn face button and a chipped corner nobody else's copy has.

One controller, drawn large and front on, like it's been placed under a specimen light. The d-pad
is worn pale and shiny across the whole cross. One of the four face buttons has gone grey; the
other three are still dark. There's a chip out of the lower right shell.

It shipped identical to a warehouse full of others. None of that survived a year in one hand.

## Why does wear turn one controller into a specific object?

Because a factory makes the shape, and a person makes the finish.

Every unit left the line with the same plastic, the same paint, the same four buttons in the same
grey. What happened after that is entirely down to how one particular hand held it — where the
thumb rested, which button got pressed hardest and most often, how it got set down. A year of that
is a pattern no other copy of the same controller has, because no other copy was held by that hand.

## Why is one button greyer than the rest?

Because it's the one that got used far more than its neighbours.

Four buttons arrive equally dark. One going pale first is a direct record of which input mattered
most to whoever played — not a guess, a measurement, worn into the plastic over however many
sessions it took. Somebody with no history with this particular controller could look at that one button and know
something true about how the owner played, without being told.

## Why is the d-pad worn across its whole cross rather than one direction?

Because a d-pad gets pressure from every side over time, and the finish goes evenly once enough
hours pass.

A pale patch on just one edge would say the owner favoured one direction. A cross worn pale all the
way round says something different: this controller simply got used constantly, in every direction,
for long enough that the whole shape shows it. The chipped corner is a separate event entirely — a
drop, a knock — sitting alongside the wear rather than caused by it.

## Isn't a rubbed d-pad just a repair waiting to happen?

Not in this drawing — nothing here is broken and nothing has been mended.

The ribbed section where the cable leaves the shell is the moulded strain relief every one of these
had from new, not tape and not a fix. The wear itself doesn't stop the controller working; a pale
cross and a grey button are cosmetic, not mechanical. This is a portrait of use, not of damage.

## Does this need to picture a real console's controller?

The shell shape, the button layout and the exact plastic colour belong to whoever manufactured it,
and that kind of industrial design gets licensed all the time.

Draw one specific, recognisable controller precisely and that's someone else's product design —
get the permission if a real one is genuinely the point. A generic controller carrying a
household's actual wear pattern is usually the better shirt regardless, because the wear is the
part nobody else can claim.

## Isn't the wear pattern itself somebody's property?

No — and that's exactly the split that makes this work.

The controller's shell is licensable, because a company made it and owns that design. The specific
places it went pale, the specific button that went grey first, the specific chip in the specific
corner: nobody manufactured those. They exist because of one person's hands over one particular
year, and that record needs no licence from anyone, because nobody else made it and nobody else
could.

## How is this different from a technique passed down in one house?

something a household *did* — a motion, repeatable, taught by watching. This is something a
controller *became*, passively, from being used the way it was used. One is a skill; the other is a

## Does it print well?

Yes — a single large object drawn in clean specimen style is close to an ideal chest print.

The wear itself is the detail to protect: keep the pale patches and the grey button as distinct,
readable tonal areas rather than a fine gradient, or they'll flatten out on fabric and the whole

Oxblood or another dark saturated ground with the controller rendered in two or three flat values
reads immediately as an object under strong light. Two to three inks.
