# The recording you kept has another voice woven in

> Taping a song off a broadcast means keeping whatever else was on air at that moment, and the voice talking over the opening becomes part of what you learned.

One steady waveform, running the length of the frame. Over its opening stretch only, a second
waveform sits on top of it — denser, spikier, drawn in a contrasting ink. A vertical line marks
exactly where the second one drops out.

Two signals occupying the same seconds isn't a flaw in the recording. It's a record of exactly how
the recording was made.

## What are the two waveforms actually showing?

A song, and whatever else was happening on the same channel when it started.

Taping music straight off a broadcast catches everything sharing that moment of air, not just the
track. If a voice was still talking as the song came in, the tape kept both, layered on top of each
other for as long as they overlapped, and cleanly separate the moment the talking stopped.

## Why does the overlap stop exactly where the line is drawn?

Because that's the actual instant the two signals stopped sharing the recording.

Nothing about that boundary is decorative — it's the point where the voice pulled back and the song
was, for the first time, on its own. The line marks the same kind of threshold as

except here what ends is another person's voice rather than your own attention.

## Why does the talking become part of the song for some listeners?

Because it's woven into the only copy they ever learned.

If the version you taped, replayed and knew by heart had a voice layered over its opening every
single time, that voice is inseparable from the song in your memory, even though it was never part
of the recording an artist made. It's the same mechanism that lets

what you actually learn is whatever version you were given, not the official one.

## Can the second waveform be based on a real broadcast?

A real broadcast voice is a specific person's actual words, spoken at a specific moment, and they
belong to that person the way any recorded speech does.

Copying a real one exactly borrows a moment that wasn't addressed to you. Drawing an invented second
waveform in the same dense, overlapping shape uses the artefact — two signals sharing an opening —
without taking anybody's actual voice. The format has no owner even when a particular instance of
it does.

## Does this apply to anything besides a radio recording?

Any listening where a second source got layered onto the first without being asked.

A message left running on an answering machine over a song already playing, a conversation caught on
a home recording made for another reason entirely — the shape is the same: one signal steady and
intended, one incidental and unrepeatable, sharing a stretch of the same tape. Broadcast voice isn't
always incidental, either —

## Isn't this just a flawed recording of the song?

Only if the point was ever to capture the song alone, and for this version it wasn't.

The tape wasn't made in a studio chasing a clean take — it was made by whoever happened to be
recording when the song happened to start. That's a specific, ordinary way of acquiring music, and
the overlap it leaves behind is evidence of exactly how, not a defect to explain away. The design
doesn't draw a radio for the same reason: the object that produced this isn't the point, the two
signals it left behind are.

## Does it print well?

Yes, and the contrast between the two waveforms is what makes it read at a glance.

Both waveforms are flat colour with hard edges, which fabric holds cleanly; the density difference
between the steady one and the spikier overlaid one does the work, so neither needs fine detail to
survive the weave. Slate, charcoal and pale grey all suit two inks — one for each signal — kept
distinct rather than blended.
