# The grille that fits, drawn floating and not installed

An exploded-view diagram runs the full height of the back: a heater's carrying handle and vented lid

One opening in the case has its correctly shaped louvre — drawn to the same careful line weight as
everything else, floating apart from the body like any other part waiting to be refitted. The other
opening already has something in it: a rectangle of diamond wire mesh, cut down from somewhere else
and bound on with loops of wire, overhanging the frame at every corner because it wasn't cut for this
heater.

## Why draw a heater coming apart instead of drawn whole?

Because an exploded view is the one diagram that treats every part as equally real, whether or not
it's actually fitted.

A photograph of the heater would show what's installed — the mesh, wired on, doing the job — and
nothing else. An exploded diagram draws the missing louvre with exactly the same weight and the same
care as the part that's actually there, floating a few centimetres off where it belongs. That's the
format's whole purpose: showing a system's correct state and its current state on the same page, at
the same scale, so the gap between them is something you can measure rather than something you're
told.

## Why does the wired-on mesh read louder than the missing part would?

Because a diagram of an empty socket says nothing happened. A diagram of a wrong part fitted says
somebody solved this themselves, tonight, with what was in reach.

Mesh bound on with wire loops isn't a repair anybody would choose — it overhangs, it's the wrong
gauge, it doesn't sit flush at the corners. But it's warm. The correct louvre, floating in the
diagram exactly where it should slot in, is doing the opposite job: it's proof the right part exists,
is known, is drawn from memory or a parts sheet, and still isn't in the case.

## What decides which part gets drawn floating and which gets drawn fitted?

Whichever part of the object actually has that story — most things people own don't.

A heater with a substituted grille works because a grille is a bounded, nameable part with a shape
that either fits an opening or doesn't; the same diagram wouldn't land on an object where nothing is
actually swapped. The choice worth making, describing your own version, is naming the specific part
and what's standing in for it — a fan blade, a control dial, a foot — rather than gesturing at
"something broken." The mismatch is the whole print; a vague one has nothing to show.

## Can a heater model number or plate like this go on a shirt?

Yes, once the model and the plate are invented rather than copied from a real manufacturer.

`KILN-3` isn't a real appliance line, and nothing here reproduces an actual brand's casing, wordmark
or parts-catalogue numbering — those belong to the company that drew them, and licensing that
material is its own conversation. An invented plate does the same narrative work a real one would and
gives up nothing: nobody's confused about which product broke, because the point wasn't a specific
product, it was a part that didn't match.

## Does the substituted-part idea work for a different appliance?

Anywhere something has a specific, nameable part that can visibly be the wrong shape for its slot.

A fan with a scavenged blade turning slightly off true. A kettle with a lid that doesn't seat all the
way down. A radio with a dial from a different set entirely. The mechanism repeats wherever a real
part and a substitute part can be drawn to the same diagram, at the same scale, so the reader sees the
gap without a caption explaining it.

## Isn't an exploded diagram too technical for something this domestic?

The technicality is what makes it feel precise rather than sentimental — it's describing a fix, not
mourning one.

A softer illustration of a broken heater would ask for sympathy. An exploded-view diagram just lays
out the parts and lets the mismatch speak for itself, which is closer to how someone actually
experiences fixing a heater at ten at night — as a specific, solvable problem with a part that's the

## Does it print well?

Yes — fine linework like this is exactly what an exploded-view diagram is built for, and it holds up
at back-print size.

Keep it to black plus one supporting grey: the outline weight carries the diagram, and the second
tone can shade the case without softening any edge into a gradient. [Hard edges are what survives

need to stay crisp rather than delicate, so keep the whole thing large enough that the finest lines
don't fall below the weave's floor. A faded olive or warm grey base suits the worn-metal tone without
fighting it.
