# One bay in the row is drawn to fit one book

## What is actually drawn here?

A run of shelf bays, elevation view, the way a carpenter sketches before cutting anything.

Three of the bays hold to one height, ruled the same as each other and dimensioned nowhere — a
height that suited the row, not any particular object. The fourth breaks the pattern on purpose. It
stands taller, it gets its own bracket, and it carries the single figure on the whole sheet.
Everything about the drawing says this bay exists because something specific had to fit inside it.

## Why is only one bay boxed off?

Because the other three didn't need deciding. They're a height repeated, not a height chosen.

A bracket on a plan marks the spot where a general rule stopped applying and somebody had to work
something out instead. Three matching bays could have been drawn once and copied along the row —
nobody dimensions a default. The fourth got its own bracket because a book came in taller than the
shelf that was about to be built for it, and the plan had to answer to the book rather than to the
row it interrupted.

## Why 31cm rather than a rounder number?

Because a book's height isn't chosen. It's read off the object and copied down.

Working to a stock size, a carpenter reaches for 30 or 32 and calls it close enough. 31cm is what
comes back when a tape measure went against something real and the figure got written down without
smoothing it into anything tidier. A shelf sized in round numbers was built for the room. A shelf
sized in 31cm was built for the one thing that had to stand in it.

## Whose plan is this to print?

Yours, if you drew it, or had it drawn, for a shelf you own. Nothing here needs anybody's
permission.

A hand-measured dimension and a bracket on a sketch are working notes, not authored work in the
sense that carries a claim — nobody owns the number 31 written next to a bracket. A named joinery
firm's logo or a signed drawing is different, and belongs to whoever made it the way any work does;
if a real firm's plan is genuinely the point, asking is part of the job. Style has no owner. A work
does, and no name appears on this one at all.

## Does this work for something other than a book?

Yes — anything a carpenter measures against rather than assumes a size for.

A television, a speaker cabinet, a particular vase a client already owns. The print isn't really
about books; it's about a plan that stopped guessing and went to fetch the object. A row of matching
bays sized for nothing in particular, next to one bay sized for something — that contrast is what
the drawing sells, on a shelf or on a shirt, the same way [an odd volume standing out in a matched

word of either book.

## What if nobody recognises it as a shelf plan?

Then they still see a technical drawing with one measurement singled out on it, which reads as
*somebody made a decision here* even without the context.

Graph paper, ruled bays and a bracketed figure say construction before they say furniture. A
stranger doesn't need to know it's a shelf to register that it's a plan — the grid alone does that.
The wearer who does know gets the second layer: that this plan exists because one bay had to be
built around a book somebody actually went and measured, rather than assumed. It's a plan for a
shelf on a day before anybody had arranged anything on it — the stage before [a shelf gets pulled

## Does it print well?

Yes, provided the grid stays the palest thing on the page and the bracket stays the darkest.

Fine ruled lines below the weave's floor fill in and vanish, so the graph paper wants drawing
slightly coarser and lighter than a real sheet, so it survives as texture rather than mud. The
pencil bays and the dimension figure want one darker grey, pressed hard, so the eye lands on the one
bay that matters straight away. Pale blue, chalk and a soft stone all read as paper without
competing with the construction-blue grid sitting under the drawing. Two inks carry it — the grey
doing the drawing, the blue doing the paper.
