# One dial, one stitch, and a hand instead of a motor

A domestic sewing machine, drawn side-on and large, spans the width of the upper back. Its body
carries a single dial and no other controls — no zigzag lever, no pattern selector, the panel blank
where a newer machine would carry both. At the right end, an oversized flywheel takes a hand crank
instead of a plug.

There's nothing to select. There's one stitch, and a dial for how long each one runs.

## What makes this a hand machine rather than an electric one?

The crank, not the shape of the body.

A hand-crank machine and its motorised descendants share the same core mechanism — a needle bar
driven by a rotating shaft, timed against a bobbin underneath — but here the shaft is turned directly
by a handle on the flywheel instead of a belt off a motor. Speed and power both come from the hand
turning it, which is also why the flywheel is drawn larger than everything else on the machine: a
bigger wheel carries more momentum per turn, and momentum is what keeps the needle moving smoothly
between one crank stroke and the next.

## Why does a machine like this manage with just one dial?

Because a straight lockstitch only has one thing worth adjusting.

A zigzag machine needs a lever for stitch width as well as length, plus a cam stack or an electronic
pattern selector to shape the swing of the needle side to side. A machine that only ever drives the
needle straight up and down has no width to set and no pattern to choose — the single dial on its
face controls stitch length, which is the only variable a straight stitch has, and every other panel
position that a newer machine would fill stays blank because there's nothing there to control.

## What's the choice in drawing it side-on rather than from above?

Side-on is the angle that shows the whole mechanism as one silhouette.

From above, a sewing machine is mostly a flat bed and a small vertical column — the crank, the
flywheel and the needle bar all sit hidden or foreshortened. Side-on lays the entire drivetrain out
along one line: crank at the right, flywheel next to it, the arm curving over to the needle at the
left. It's the view that reads as a machine rather than as a box, which matters at back-print size.

## Is there a rights question with drawing an old machine like this?

Very little, as long as no maker's badge is legible.

The general shape of a hand-crank sewing machine — cast body, overhanging arm, side flywheel — is a
form, not a specific company's design, and no name is printed anywhere on this one to license in the
first place. That absence is doing real work: unlike
[a label deliberately inked with somebody's own name](/stories/the-name-inked-into-the-label),
nothing here identifies a maker to clear. A specific badge, drawn legibly, would be a different
question.

## Does this work for a different single-function machine?

Any tool that does exactly one thing works the same way — an overlocker built for one seam type, a
buttonholer, a treadle machine with no motor at all. What carries over isn't the sewing machine
specifically, it's a mechanism drawn plainly enough that a dial, a crank or a single blade tells the
whole story of what the tool does, the same principle behind

## Isn't a machine that only does one stitch a limitation worth avoiding?

Only if the seam being sewn needed a different stitch, and most of what a garment needs is a straight
one.

A straight lockstitch closes side seams, hems and most repairs; zigzag exists mainly for stretch
fabric and finishing raw edges, which is a job this machine was never asked to do. Fewer settings
also means fewer parts that can drift out of adjustment — a width lever and a cam stack are two more
things to wear, slip or need resetting than a machine built to do only one job.

## Does it print well?

Yes — a wide, flat back print holds a mechanical line drawing better than a chest print would.

Cream carries the machine's body against forest green, and a single brass ink is enough for the dial
and the crank handle to read as metal without a second grey. Keep the flywheel's spokes and the
dial's markings crisp rather than distressed — the distress belongs to the casting's shading, not to
the parts that still need to read as legible mechanism at a glance.
