# What the scanner does when nothing is above it

Around it, nothing. A field of black with no gradient and no detail anywhere in it.

The leaf was lit like an object under a lamp. The black around it was not lit at all — because
there was nothing up there to light.

## Why is the black behind the leaf completely flat, with no gradient in it?

Because the scanner recorded exactly what came back to it, and nothing came back from an open lid.

A camera in a dim room still returns something — walls, a ceiling, the grain of low light, because
ambient light is always bouncing off something. A scanner has no ambient light. Its only light
source is the bar sweeping underneath the glass, and that light only returns an image where
something sits close enough on the glass to reflect it back. With the lid left up, everything past
the leaf's edge is scanning a room with the light aimed away from it, and the sensor gets nothing
to record. Not dark grey, not shadow. Nothing, which a scanner renders as flat, absolute black — the
opposite failure to [a scan that comes back with too much information rather than too
little](/stories/the-scan-that-shows-the-next-page), where the light finds a second sheet
it was never meant to see.

## Why is the leaf lit from underneath rather than from above?

Because the only light in the machine is underneath.

Ordinary photographs are lit from above or from the side, which is why a leaf photographed on a
table would carry a shadow beneath it. Here the light travels up through the glass and off the leaf
back into the sensor, so the shading runs backwards from what a camera would produce — the surface
closest to the glass reads brightest, and any thickness in the leaf itself throws its shadow
upward, out of the frame's logic rather than into it. That reversed lighting is the detail that
gives away the source before anything else does.

## What is the thin bright line where the leaf meets the glass?

The strongest return the light gets — the point where the leaf sits flattest and closest to the
source.

Contact with the glass compresses the leaf down to the plane the light is aimed at, and the
brightness follows the pressure: brightest exactly at contact, falling away as the leaf lifts even
slightly off the surface toward its curling edges. A halo like this cannot be drawn from a
photograph of a leaf lying on a table, because nothing about a table lights the edge of an object
that way. It is a halo a flatbed produces on purpose, on anything flat enough to press against its
glass — the same mechanism, read in reverse, that turns [a ridge in a folded sheet into a line with
a shadow down one side](/stories/the-crease-that-scanned-as-a-line): height off the glass,
either way, comes back as light.

## Who owns a drawing of a leaf on a scanner?

Nobody. A leaf shape belongs to no species and no artist, and the drawing here copies neither a
photograph nor anyone's illustration.

If a real, identifiable specimen — a herbarium sheet, a botanical plate with somebody's name on it —
were the actual point of a design, the institution or illustrator holding it could license the
reproduction, which is routine for archives. Here the leaf is invented for the print, so there is
nothing to clear. Style has no owner. A work does.

## Does this only work with a leaf?

No. Anything small, flat and dense enough to press against glass reads the same way — a coin, a
key, a pressed flower, a hand of playing cards fanned out.

What changes with a lid held up is what happens to the field around the object, not the object
itself. A single small item against total black reads as a specimen. Two or three, scattered rather
than centred, read closer to what actually happened — someone laid things on the glass, pressed the
button, and never lowered the lid.

## Doesn't leaving the lid up just ruin the scan?

Most of the time, yes, and the result gets redone with the lid closed. This is the copy that
survived instead — flattering by accident, in a way [a scanner catching dust on its own glass as a
field of scattered light](/stories/the-dust-that-scanned-as-stars) is a different kind of
accident from the same machine. A closed lid gives a white or pale grey field behind whatever is
being copied, ordinary and expected. Leaving it open trades that expected result for something no
photograph of the same object would ever produce — and this is the rare case where the mistake looks
better than the outcome it was meant to replace.

## Does it print well?

Yes, and the flat black is doing most of the work for you.

The black needs to hold as one unbroken field with no banding or gradient anywhere in it — any print
process that introduces texture into pure black undoes the entire point, since flat absolute black
is the whole claim being made. The leaf's veins want reproducing at a size that survives fabric,
which means slightly thicker and fewer than the source drawing; fine hairline veins close up first.
The tan of the leaf against true black is close to the strongest contrast two flat colours can give
each other, so one ink for the leaf and the garment's own black behind it is enough — nothing here
needs a third colour.
