# The maker signed the part nobody polishes

That illegibility is deliberate. Reading it means taking the sword apart; looking at the outside

## What part of the sword is this?

The tang — the length of blade that continues up inside the handle and is hidden by it once the
sword is assembled.

Every full-length blade has one: the section that's deliberately never polished, sharpened or
displayed, because in ordinary use nobody sees it. It's a different object from [the tempered edge

finished for daily viewing; this one is finished for storage.

## Why would a maker sign a part nobody sees?

Because being seen day to day was never the point of this particular signature.

The chisel marks record a smith's identity for whoever eventually takes the handle off — a
restorer, an appraiser, a later owner doing maintenance. It's a mark meant for one specific kind of
reader, at one specific future moment, rather than for daily display.

## Why is the tang left rusty instead of cleaned up?

Because the rust is dated evidence, and cleaning the surface erases exactly what it records.

A tang develops its own patina over the decades — a particular colour and texture of oxidation that
specialists read for consistency with a blade's claimed age and history. Polish that surface back
to bright metal and the newest possible reading of it becomes "today," which is a worse answer than
the uneven rust it replaced.

## What makes a good tang design, if it's meant to look unreadable?

Restraint on the marks themselves, since anything crisp breaks the effect.

A convincing tang needs file marks running in one consistent diagonal rather than a scribble, a
surface aged unevenly rather than uniform grey, and a peg hole that's slightly irregular rather
than a perfect circle — the mark of hand tools, not a laser. The struck marks should sit on the
surface like something worn by decades of handling, not centred and framed like a logo.

## Whose intellectual property covers a tang design like this one?

Nobody's, when it's built from the generic type rather than copied from one documented blade.

A tang's shape — its taper, its peg placement, its file-mark style — is a functional convention
shared across the whole craft, the way a dovetail joint isn't owned by any one carpenter. What
would cross a line is copying the exact, identifiable rust pattern and mark layout of one specific,
documented sword down to its individual pitting — that's reproducing one object's actual recorded

## Does it print well?

Yes, if the ironwork keeps its texture instead of smoothing into a flat brown block.

A tang printed as one flat rust colour reads as a blob, not as metal. What holds it together as an
object is variation: a highlight where the file marks catch light, a couple of deepening shades
where rust has pooled, and the peg hole rendered as an actual hollow with a shadowed edge inside it.
Three or four tones handle it; a soft photographic gradient just muddies into brown.
