# Frequency decided this rack, not colour

A spool rack, drawn full-width across the back. Dowel after dowel, each one carrying reels of
thread in whatever colours happen to sit next to each other — a bright tone against a muted one, a
near-empty spool beside a full one, nothing grouped the way a shop display would group it.

No two adjacent spools share a family of colour. That's not disorder. It's a different sorting
rule entirely.

## If it isn't sorted by colour, what is it sorted by?

How often each thread gets picked up.

A rack used daily gets refilled and reached for in whatever order the work demands, and the work
doesn't care what a spool looks like next to its neighbour — it cares what's needed for the next
seam. Over enough projects, the spools that answer that question constantly end up wherever there
was room when they were last put back, while the spools nobody has needed in months stay wherever
they were first hung. Colour was never the organising axis. Use was, and use doesn't sort visually.

## Why does the amount of thread left vary so much from spool to spool?

Because it's a direct measure of how many times that colour has answered a call.

A spool worked down close to its core has been threaded through a machine dozens of times over; a
spool still nearly full has been picked up rarely, maybe once, maybe never. Put them side by side
on the same dowel and the difference in fullness is doing the same job dust does on

one measures use by what's worn away, the other by what's left untouched, and both are reading time
rather than looks.

## What does the small "40" label actually mark?

A weight, not a colour or a brand — the kind of number thread is conventionally labelled with to
say how fine or heavy it is.

It's the sort of detail that only matters to somebody choosing thread for a specific job, which is
exactly who a rack like this is built for. Everything else on the print is left unlabelled on
purpose; the one number that survives is the one a working hand actually needs to read at a glance.

## Does anybody own the design of a spool rack?

No — a wall-mounted dowel rack for holding reels is a generic fixture with no branding drawn on it
here.

If a specific shop's own rack, sign, or a particular thread manufacturer's spool design is the
point, that's a separate, licensable request — plenty of haberdashery brands do license their
packaging. Drawn plain, the way this one is, it belongs to the general idea of a thread rack, not
to anyone's specific version of one.

## Does this only work for a sewing room?

No — any wall of identical containers that gets used unevenly sorts itself the same way, whatever
is sitting in them.

A tool wall, a spice rack, a shelf of paint tins: give people free choice over which container they
reach for and the fullness gradient across the set tends to trace actual habit rather than
whatever order they were shelved in. The spool rack is just an unusually legible version, because
thread visibly runs low and the dowels hold the reels in plain sight rather than behind a door.

## Isn't this just a messy shelf, not a design worth printing?

Mess has no pattern to it. This has one, once you know what to look for.

A shelf stocked at random would still cluster by colour here and there, just by chance. A rack
shaped entirely by which threads get grabbed produces a jumble that looks careless at first glance
and reads as a use log on the second. The print isn't arguing the rack is tidy — it's arguing the
untidiness has a cause, and the cause is legible. It's a different scale of the same argument as

that's one habit made visible on one object; this is the same kind of frequency, spread across a
whole wall of them at once.

## Does a design this dense print well across a full back?

Yes, if the palette stays tight — which it does here, at two inks against the garment.

A crowded scene like this survives fabric because every spool is a simple, flat shape with a hard
outline, not because of fine shading; cream carries the rack and the lighter reels, one steel grey
carries the darker thread, and the oxblood ground does the rest of the tonal work for free. Trying
to add a third ink to differentiate more colours of thread would be the mistake — the density
already reads at a glance, and more ink would just compete with it.
