# A quilt grid erases most of a print and keeps one word

> Cutting twenty garments into equal squares for a quilt destroys nearly every print on them, but the same grid is why one fragment survived at all.

Twenty squares, one grid, five across and four down. Each square comes from a different garment,
a different weave, a different worn-in tone.

Cutting a shirt into a square this size takes the fabric and leaves most of what was printed on it
behind.

## Why does a quilt square almost never keep a whole print?

Because the square's size is fixed by the grid, not by what happened to be printed on the shirt it
came from.

A print sits wherever the original garment put it — centred on a chest, run down a sleeve, wrapped
round a hem — and none of those positions line up with a uniform square cut from the same block of
cloth every time. The square wins. Whatever of the print falls inside its edges survives; everything
outside is a different square, or nothing at all.

## What is `ARDS`, and why is it the only fragment that reads?

Four letters is what was left when the square's edge cut through a longer word.

Most of the squares in this piece carry no more than a shape — a curved line, a block of colour, a
corner of something that used to mean more. `ARDS` is invented for this design specifically, not a
scrap of a real word cut short; it exists so the piece can show what a surviving fragment looks like
without pointing at an actual maker's mark. It reads because the cut happened to fall between two
letters rather than through the middle of one, which is closer to luck than to design.

## Does the grid destroy the prints, or preserve what's left of them?

Both, in the same cut.

Squaring off twenty different garments to the same size is what erases nineteen prints down to
fragments or nothing — and it's also the only reason any of them survived being thrown out. Compare

there the record sits layered on one piece; here it's spread across twenty. A quilt square is a
second use for cloth that had already stopped being a shirt, and the grid is indifferent to what was
on the fabric, which is why it doesn't play favourites between a full logo and a blank back panel.

## Why is this a rights question at all if most of the print is gone?

Because the print was somebody's work before it was a fragment, and the amount surviving doesn't
change who made it.

A shirt is yours to cut into squares once you own it — nobody licenses a pair of scissors. But a
graphic that was printed on it belongs to whoever designed it, whole or cut down to four letters, and
that's true of a recognisable logo the same as an obscure one. That's why the fragment in a design
like this is invented rather than lifted from something real: an invented scrap carries no claim to
untangle, whatever it happens to say — the same question applies whether the garment ends up as a
quilt square or [reshaped entirely into something else](/stories/the-one-that-became-a-bag).

## Would this work with squares from one wardrobe, or does it need twenty different sources?

Either works, and they read differently.

Twenty garments from one household gives a quilt with a narrow range of tones and a family
resemblance in the fragments — worn the same way, faded on the same shoulder. Squares pulled from
unrelated sources give the opposite: more contrast between weaves, less chance any two fragments ever
belonged to the same story. Neither is more legitimate; it's a choice about what the finished object
is meant to look like it survived.

## Why leave the seams visible instead of hiding them?

Because a hidden seam would let the quilt pretend it was cut as one piece, and it wasn't.

Visible stitching along every square's edge does the same job as the fragment itself: it tells you
where the boundaries actually fall. A pieced quilt with disguised seams looks like fabric printed to
resemble squares; one with stitching left plain looks like what it is — [twenty separate endings sewn

## Does a design this busy print well on a shirt?

Yes, if the squares are kept as flat shapes rather than rendered texture.

Twenty different weaves is too much detail to reproduce literally at chest size — the print should
treat each square as a block of flat colour with a hard edge, and let `ARDS` be the one place fine
linework earns its space. A short, consistent palette across the grid reads as a quilt; a naturalistic
one reads as noise.
