# Dozens of lines, one corner, no driver named

Nobody drew this on purpose. It's an average taken by people who never met, one pass at a time.

## Why does a corner accumulate marks like this?

Because every driver who leaves rubber on it is tracing roughly the same line, and none of those
lines quite land in the same place twice.

A corner has a mathematically ideal path through it, but nobody actually drives the ideal path —
tyre wear, a car's weight, how confident a driver feels that morning, all nudge the line a few
centimetres one way or the other. Repeated over years by drivers who mostly don't know each other,
those small disagreements build into the tangled arc printed here.

## Why do the marks cluster hardest at one point?

Because that's where the corner actually is, in the sense that matters to a driver rather than the
sense that matters to a survey map.

A bend's geometry gives it a single point where a car is working hardest — the apex — and however
differently everybody enters and exits, most lines converge somewhere near it. The cluster is a
crowd-built answer to a question no one driver could measure alone: not where the corner is drawn
on paper, but where it actually asks the most of a car.

### What the R 45 marking is doing

`R 45` is the kind of figure a corner sometimes carries painted at its entry — a radius, in metres,
telling a driver arriving for the first time roughly how tight the bend is before the apex comes
into view. It's information rather than decoration, rendered here in the same weathered road paint
as the rest of the surface rather than as clean printed type.

## Is a specific corner's mark pattern anybody's property?

A road surface belongs to whoever maintains it, not to the drivers who've worn a pattern into it,
so drawing what the asphalt actually looks like doesn't need anyone's permission the way
[an invented code cast into a cam cover](/stories/the-engine-bay-as-a-portrait) still respects
a line a real manufacturer's mark would cross. If a specific real corner has become tied to a
franchise or a team in people's minds, that association belongs to the franchise; the wear pattern
on the road underneath it doesn't belong to anybody.

## Does this work for a corner that isn't on a mountain road?

Any surface that records repeated use the same way does — a roundabout worn down by decades of the
same line, a skate spot's grind marks, a football pitch's bare patches in front of both goals. What
carries the design is an averaged record left by people who never coordinated, not the mountain
setting specifically. It sits well next to

that print is about the route, this one about a single point on it.

## Doesn't a print like this glamorise taking a corner too fast?

It reads a surface rather than encourages an approach to it — nothing in the design rewards speed
or singles out a fastest line among the dozens shown.

What's drawn is history, not instruction: marks left by drivers of every skill level, some careful,
some not, folded into one tangled record with no line marked as correct. The culture this comes
from spends a lot of its time doing the opposite of racing —
[parked, engines off, six lanes with nobody on them](/stories/the-wangan-at-four-am) — paying
close attention to a road over years, rather than one dramatic lap on it.

## Does it print well?

Yes, and the accumulation is what needs to survive, not any single mark.

Rendering every tyre line at full original density turns to a grey smear at fabric resolution — the
fix is fewer marks, drawn a little thicker with more contrast between the faint old ones and the
fresh dark ones, so the cluster still reads as built from many separate passes rather than as one
blurred stain. Concrete grey or charcoal holds the soot-black surface without competing with it.
