# The gap that has to match on both sides

## What actually happens where two strokes cross?

One passes over, the other gives way — and the gap it gives has to match on both sides.

The stroke on top stays whole, unbroken by anything behind it. The stroke underneath is cut into two
pieces, each stopping short of the crossing by the same distance. That distance is the whole technical
content of a junction: get it right and the eye reads "this one goes behind that one" without ever
consciously measuring anything. Get it wrong and the eye starts measuring.

## Why does the gap have to be the same width on both sides?

Because an uneven gap reads as a mistake rather than as a choice, even to somebody who couldn't say why.

A gap wider on one side than the other breaks the geometric logic that says the underlying stroke is a
continuous thing passing behind a continuous thing — it starts to look like two unrelated pieces that
happen to line up near a crossing. Consistent width either side is what proves, visually, that one
stroke really is one stroke, interrupted rather than assembled. [The same problem shows up wherever one

## Why is this the hardest part of the whole alphabet to get right?

Because it's the one place where two separate decisions — the shape of each stroke — have to agree
with each other, made at the same time, in the same small area.

Everywhere else in a letter, one decision follows from the last: a stroke's width follows from the
tool, a terminal's shape follows from how much time there is. A junction has no such order. Both
strokes were already decided before they met, and now they have to look like they were always going to
cross exactly here, at exactly this angle, with exactly this gap. There's no earlier decision to fall
back on.

## Does a bad junction ruin an otherwise good letter?

Usually, because it's disproportionately visible for how small it is.

A junction is a small fraction of a letter's total area and a large fraction of where the eye actually
lands, because crossings are where the shape stops being predictable and a viewer has to actively parse
what's happening. A clean one is invisible; a viewer's eye slides through it without registering
anything. An uneven one is the first thing seen, before the rest of the letter gets any attention.

## Who owns a crossing technique like this?

The technique is nobody's; the letter it appears in can belong to somebody.

A consistent-gap crossing is a method, the same standing as a drop shadow or a hooked terminal, and a
method belongs to whoever uses it well. What's actually protected is a finished letterform in a specific
hand — and painting it somewhere unauthorised doesn't remove that protection. At 5Pointz, walls were
whitewashed overnight with no warning to the artists who'd painted them; a jury found the building's
owner had violated the Visual Artists Rights Act, a 1990 amendment to US federal copyright law
protecting work of "recognized stature," and the case ended in about $6.7 million awarded to 21
artists, affirmed on appeal. None of that reaches the crossing technique itself. Nobody owns the drop
shadow, the bite or the hooked terminal, any more than anybody owns a serif — a specific writer's
alphabet, drawn in their hand, is theirs.

## Does the junction still matter when the whole piece is deliberately unreadable?

If anything it matters more, because it's one of the few places a viewer can get a foothold.

In a dense, deliberately hard-to-read mass, [a keyline running around the whole outer edge does most of
the work of separating the piece from the wall](/stories/the-keyline-that-holds-it-together),
but inside that edge, junctions are where a practised eye starts finding individual letters. A sloppy
junction in a simple, readable word is a flaw. A sloppy junction in a complex one is a flaw multiplied
by every crossing in the piece.

## Does it print well?

Only if the gap survives at fabric scale, which is a narrower margin than it looks on screen.

The rest of a junction — flat colour, hard edges on both strokes — is an easy case for a garment print.
The gap itself is the risk: narrow enough to match the drawing and wide enough that ink spread or the
weave's own texture doesn't close it into a solid patch. It's usually the single detail in a piece like
this that fails first, and the one worth checking closest before it goes to print.
