What is a hop chain a drawing of?
A route that traffic takes through several relays before it reaches wherever it's actually going, instead of travelling there directly.
Each link is a machine somewhere, run by somebody, in some jurisdiction. Traffic arrives, sits briefly, and leaves again for the next one. Nobody at any single link can see both where the traffic came from and where it's finally headed — that's the whole promise. The chain in the print is that promise, drawn as geometry rather than explained as a paragraph, the same way a manifest turns a person into a shipping field instead of a sentence about one.
Seven links is a working number rather than a security guarantee. More hops adds delay without adding much real protection past a certain point, and fewer than that leaves too small a set of operators to hide among. The count on the shirt is closer to what a route actually looks like than a round number chosen for effect.
Why does length stand in for something real?
Because a longer link took longer to cross, and time in this kind of route usually means distance, paperwork, or both.
A short link is close and fast — traffic barely touches it before moving on. A long one sat somewhere: crossed a border, waited in a queue, passed through hands willing to hold it a while. Drawing links at different lengths puts jurisdiction and delay on the chest without writing either word — the geometry carries the fact, the way a signal box's levers carry a whole timetable without a single line of text.
Why is the third link drawn so much longer than the rest?
Because that's the hop where the traffic was most exposed.
A link only has to be trusted for the moment traffic is inside it. The longer that moment runs, the more time an operator had to look, log, or simply keep a record because their own system does that by default. The third link isn't drawn long because it's the most sinister — it's drawn long because it's the one point in the whole route where somebody had the opportunity, whether or not they took it.
Is a real anonymising network being depicted here?
No. Nothing about the design names a real service, protocol, or piece of software — the chain is a generic shape for a route with more than one hop in it, which belongs to nobody in particular.
If a specific named service were the actual subject, its name and branding would belong to whoever built it, and using them would be a licensing question like any other. This design isn't reaching for that; it's reaching for the shape a hop chain makes on a page, which is closer to the shape a compatibility grid makes than to any one company's chart.
Does the same chain work for defences that aren't about data?
Anything routed through intermediaries to put distance between a source and a destination reads the same way — cash moved through several accounts before it settles, a message relayed hand to hand through people who each know only the person either side of them, a shipment routed through more ports than the distance requires.
The links get longer wherever the route pauses, and it's the same tell each time: distance measures trust, not geography. A gift for somebody who runs their own small operation this way — moving stock, moving cash, moving anything they'd rather not have traced back to a single point of origin — reads the chain correctly on sight, without the shirt having to explain itself.
What's the strongest objection to trusting a chain like this?
That the chain looks reassuring precisely where it should look uncertain.
Seven solid links reads as seven solid guarantees, and it isn't that. Anyone who controlled every link, or who could compare records across enough of them, could still trace the whole route end to end — the drawing doesn't claim otherwise, which is why the last link fades rather than closing cleanly. A chain that ended in a solid square would be lying. This one ends honestly, admitting the part nobody wearing it can actually verify.
Does it print well?
Yes, if the two accent colours stay flat.
Cyan and magenta on near-black is a strong combination provided each link is a single solid tone rather than a gradient across its length — a gradient reads as a glow on screen and goes muddy on cotton. The joining squares want to be crisp and slightly heavier than the links themselves, so the eye can count seven distinct pieces rather than one wandering line. The fade on the last link is the one place a soft edge earns its keep; everywhere else, the edge should be hard. Near-black holds the glow the way a dark screen holds it in a dim room, which is most of why the combination works at all — the same print on a pale ground would read as a bracelet instead of a circuit.
