The butter wrapper is also the scale
A butter wrapper printed with weight lines lets a cook measure the block with a knife instead of a set of scales, which matters when both hands are already greasy.

Why does a butter wrapper have a ruler printed on it?
Because the thing being measured can also do the measuring.
A block of butter is a known weight in a known shape, so its own wrapper can carry a scale along one edge without needing anything else in the kitchen — no bowl, no dial, no hands free enough to operate one. Cut where the line says 100g and the two pieces are 100g and 150g, no scale involved.
Why does cutting at a line work as measuring?
Because the wrapper's numbers are doing arithmetic a scale would otherwise do for you.
Butter of a given brand comes in a standard block of even density, so a straight cut a known distance along it removes a known weight — the manufacturer worked that sum out once, at the factory, so nobody has to work it out again at a chopping board with greasy fingers and a recipe propped against the kettle.
What makes this design worth noticing?
That it solves the one problem a kitchen scale is actually bad at.
A scale needs a dry surface, a free hand and somewhere to put it down — three things a cook creaming butter and sugar rarely has. The wrapper's lines are on the object already in your hand, which is the same logic behind the two rings on a dial that let you read a weight without a flat surface to set it on, just solved with printing instead of a mechanism.
Can I put a real dairy's wrapper design on it?
Not their brand, though the idea of a measuring scale on a wrapper belongs to nobody.
Printing a scale along a wrapper's edge is a manufacturing convention, not anybody's invention to licence — plenty of dairies do it. A specific brand's name, colours or lettering are theirs, and worth asking about if a real one is the point. An invented wrapper reads exactly as useful and avoids the question entirely.
Does this only apply to butter?
Anywhere a block-shaped food is sold in a wrapper with a scale printed on it.
Lard, margarine and some cheeses carry the same idea — a portion marked out along the packaging rather than left to a scale. It's the quieter cousin of a best-before date stamped on an egg box: both are information printed straight onto the food's own container because that's the only surface guaranteed to be in the room.
Isn't a wrapper too disposable a thing to print?
That's exactly why it's worth printing.
Nobody keeps a butter wrapper. It gets balled up and binned within the week, which means a design that solves a real problem gets thrown away by the million without anyone ever framing it. The lines on the jug in the next cupboard along don't get that luxury — they're calculated to close up as the glass narrows, and they stay for years, while the wrapper does its one job and vanishes.
Does it print well?
Yes — flat black lines and numerals on a warm yellow ground are a strong, high-contrast pairing.
Set the cutting marks and the six figures larger and bolder than the wrapper itself needs; a real wrapper's print is fine enough to disappear at shirt scale, so the numbers want treating as the main event rather than a detail.
