The ceiling turned out to be a ruler

Nobody draws a ceiling. Somebody counted one, and then drew the count.

Why would anybody count a ceiling?

Because it is a grid of identical units, directly in your eyeline, at a moment when you have nothing to do.

Waiting rooms, corridors, the twenty minutes before a meeting starts — these are the conditions. There is a regular pattern above you, it repeats without variation, and counting it converts dead time into a small piece of arithmetic that produces a real answer about the room you are sitting in.

That answer is the point. Multiply the count by one tile and you know how wide the room is, without a tape measure, without permission, and without anybody noticing you did it. The building told you its dimensions by being built out of repeated parts.

Why is it drawn flat instead of in perspective?

Because perspective would make it a picture of a ceiling, and this is a measurement.

Every tile here is the same size as every other tile. Nothing recedes, nothing converges, the far corner is drawn identically to the near one. That is not what a ceiling looks like from underneath and it is not trying to be — it is what a ceiling becomes once you have stopped looking at it and started counting it.

The contrast is with a room drawn to be looked at, like an interior opened out wide enough to hold floor, ceiling and both walls at once, which bends everything towards one point to make the space feel bigger. Flattening does the opposite. It throws away how the room feels and keeps how large it is.

What is the measuring bar under it for?

It is a drawing convention, borrowed by somebody who had no drawing to make.

A bar with a tick at each end and a figure underneath belongs on a technical drawing, where it tells a builder what to cut. Here it sits under a picture of something already built, which is a strange place for it — it dimensions a thing that exists rather than one being specified.

What the figure claims

The line reads ONE TILE IS 600 WIDE, and the full stop at the end of it is part of the design. Take it as what this picture states about its own tiles, not as a number reported from the trade. It is the count's working shown on the garment: the unit, stated once, so the arithmetic is available to anybody who wants to do it.

Isn't a grid of identical squares dull to look at?

The three irregularities are what make it a picture rather than a texture.

Two panels in one column are blank and brighter than everything around them, and a single round vent in concentric rings sits away to the other side. That is all the variation there is in the whole field. In a closed grid, three exceptions carry as much weight as a busy drawing does, because the eye has been given nothing else to land on.

They also make the grid countable. A field of identical squares defeats counting — you lose your place. A blank panel two rows up and a vent three columns across are landmarks, and the count runs between them. The features that break the pattern are the ones that let you use it.

Is there anything to license in a ceiling?

No. A grid of squares is not anybody's work, and this one was drawn rather than photographed.

Suspended ceilings are a construction method used everywhere by everybody, with no author to trace. No building is named here, no manufacturer's tile is reproduced, and the single line of type was written for this print. There is nothing to clear.

Where a real place genuinely is the point — the ceiling of a particular room, photographed — that is somebody's photograph, and the permission for it is obtainable and part of the job. Most of the time the real ceiling is not the point. An invented one carries the same count and belongs to whoever is wearing it. Style has no owner. A work does.

Does it work for a room other than this one?

Yes, and the arithmetic is what travels.

Floor tiles counted heel to heel, the bricks in a wall opposite a bus stop, the panels in a train ceiling, the slats in a fence. What has to hold is that the unit repeats exactly, that it was put there for a reason unrelated to measuring, and that the count was done by somebody with time on their hands.

As a set it works the same way: several people, several rooms of the same imagined building, one number each. Beside a grid you counted, two typed lines slid into a holder on a door or a card giving the two hours some lights run to belong to the same place without repeating a mark.

Does it print well?

Yes, and it is a one-ink design, which is why the linework can be this fine.

Dusty navy on pale white, no second colour anywhere. The fine double rule at each tile edge is the risky part, because two thin lines close together will bridge into one thick line if they are drawn at the weave's floor — they want more space between them than a drawing on paper would need. The blank panels are unprinted shirt, so they cost nothing and come out brighter than any ink could.

The outer ruled line is the print's own edge, and it is the case where a rectangle is legitimate: that boundary is the edge of the ceiling being counted, not a box drawn around a picture. A broken, slightly worn ink texture suits it, because a ceiling grid drawn in perfectly solid line reads as software output rather than as something a person set down.
