Nobody carved that dark patch. A hand did, by returning to the same two centimetres of wood for longer than anyone was keeping count.

What is a dibber actually for?

Making a hole of a known depth, fast, without bending down twice to check it.

A trowel digs a hole you then judge by eye. A dibber is pushed straight in to a mark, pulled out, and the hole is already the right size for whatever's going into it — a seedling's rootball, a bulb, a cutting. Planting out a full tray means a whole run of holes, and a tool that removes the judging step from each one is doing real work, not decorative work.

Why is the handle darker in that one place and nowhere else?

Because a palm and four fingers close on the same spot on every single push, and the rest of the handle is barely touched by comparison.

Skin oil darkens wood faster than weather does, and pressure burnishes it smoother at the same time. Do that thousands of times over several seasons and the grip point stops looking like the rest of the handle at all — not stained on purpose, just used more than everywhere else was. It's the same accident that leaves a hand fork's outer tines shorter than its middle one: neither tool was shaped by a maker's intention after it left the shop.

Why do three depth rings matter more than they look like they should?

Because a seedling put in too deep uses up its reserves before it reaches daylight, and one put in too shallow dries out or gets lifted by the first hard frost.

A dibber that only made a hole wouldn't be much use — the hole has to stop at the right depth, which is what the burnt rings are for. Push to the shallow ring for one thing, the deep ring for another, and the decision that actually matters is made once, by whoever burnt the rings in, rather than guessed afresh at every hole along a whole bed.

What makes a well-drawn version of this worth choosing over a tidy outline?

Keeping the wear uneven rather than smoothing it into a symmetrical accent.

A dibber drawn as a clean cone with a neat gradient at the top is decoration pretending to be a tool. One where the dark patch sits slightly off-centre, where the point is genuinely chipped and not just shaded, and where the grain keeps running through the polish rather than stopping at its edge, reads as an object that has actually been used — which is the entire subject of the design.

Who owns the numbers burnt into a tool's handle?

Nobody. A depth marking is a convention, not a trademark — any maker can burn rings into a dibber and any of them mean roughly the same thing to whoever's using it.

What is owned is a specific toolmaker's name, their stamp, their particular casting or turning of the handle — ordinary licensing applies there the same as anywhere else, if a real one is the point of the shirt. Left generic, as this drawing is, it stays a plain object with a plain convention on it, which is what lets the wear pattern carry all the weight instead.

Does the same idea work for a tool two people share, or as a gift?

It changes what the design is arguing, rather than stopping working.

A tool one person has used for a decade has a grip pattern that's genuinely theirs — off to one side, at their own angle. A tool bought new for somebody starting out hasn't earned that yet, and a design for them is honestly a plain outline without the polish, or a promise of the polish to come. A trug drawn empty rather than full makes a related bet: that the object's history is more interesting than what it's currently holding.

Isn't the polish just dirt, not something worth printing?

That's the natural first read, and it's wrong for the same reason a coin's smoothed edge isn't dirt either.

Dirt is even and covers everything the same amount; this patch has a shape, and the shape is the shape of a grip. The angled wear on a hoe blade reads the same way once you know to look for it — not damage, a record of the specific motion that made it.

Does it print well?

Yes — one large object with a hard silhouette and a single area of tonal change is a strong shape on fabric.

Cream on earth brown keeps the dibber's outline clean and lets the darker patch and the burnt rings read as genuine changes in the wood rather than shading for its own sake. One or two inks is plenty; the grain lines want to stay sparse rather than filling the whole shaft, or they'll compete with the polish for attention.
