Eight discs run left to right in a straight line — new moon, then more light, full at the centre, then less again, back to new. Every one of them is made of nothing but dots: no drawn circle, no outline, just cream stipple on charcoal, denser where the moon is lit and thinning to nothing where it isn't.

There's no line anywhere in the whole design.

Take away outline and the drawing has to do everything with how close together the dots sit.

What is this design actually made of?

Dots, and only dots — density standing in for every other tool a drawing usually has.

There's no outline defining where a disc ends, no shading gradient, no hatching. Each moon exists purely because dots are placed close together in some areas and further apart in others, and the eye assembles a circle and a light source out of that pattern on its own.

How does dot density describe a moon phase?

Closer dots read as lit, sparser dots read as dark, and the edge of the disc exists only because the dots stop.

That last part is the trick worth noticing: nothing is drawn around a moon here. The circular boundary is a side effect of dots being placed in a circular area and nowhere else, which is a slower way to make an edge than drawing one, and the only one that doesn't blur when it's scaled down or printed coarse.

Why put eight of them in a row instead of one moon?

Because a row implies time passing, and a single moon can only ever be a static symbol.

One disc is a picture of an object. Eight in sequence, moving from empty to full and back to empty, reads as a cycle in progress rather than a thing that simply exists — the same information, arranged so it can only be read one way, left to right.

What makes a good dotwork piece?

Deliberate, even spacing rather than a random scatter that happens to look grainy.

A dot pattern that's genuinely random reads as noise, not tone — the discipline is placing dots along a curve precisely enough that a circle still emerges even though nothing enforces it. A single mark built from the same technique, blown up large enough to fill a whole chest, runs on exactly this same requirement: the pattern has to hold up at a size where every dot is visible on its own.

Who owns a dotwork moon design?

Nobody owns the technique, and nobody owns the moon.

Dotwork is a method of building tone, not a subject, and moon phases are about as universal a subject as exists — nobody has a claim on either one. What is licensable, the ordinary way any drawing is, is a specific artist's particular stippling hand: their exact rhythm and spacing on a specific piece. The dots on this shirt were placed fresh.

Does the same idea work with something other than eight moons?

Yes — the device is the repeated states, not the specific count or the specific object.

Fewer discs still reads as a sequence as long as there's more than one; the mechanism just needs enough repeats to establish a direction. The same principle in reverse is a single shape carved out of solid black rather than built up from marks — worth comparing, because it shows tone can be made by removal just as easily as by addition.

Does a row of moons have to mean something specific?

No. It works exactly as well as a piece of drawing as it does as a piece of symbolism.

Some rows of moons on a chest are marking something particular to the wearer, and plenty aren't — they're just a well-made sequence of discs that happens to be satisfying to look at, the way a a single hairline stem running the full height of a print is satisfying without needing a story attached. Neither reading is the correct one; the design carries both.

Does it print well?

Yes, in one ink — cream on charcoal.

The full-moon end of the row is the easy part: dots packed close together print reliably as long as they're not so tight they merge into a solid disc, which is worth guarding against on purpose. The thin-crescent end is the harder one — the sparsest dots have to stay above the weave's minimum printable size even when they're spaced far apart, or the darkest part of the cycle disappears first.
