A tree that has been argued with for fifteen years

One trunk, dead straight up the centre of the chest. Four pairs of arms run out from it, level, evenly spaced, each carrying a row of short vertical spurs. The whole tree is pressed flat, mirror symmetric, as if it had been ironed against the shirt.

No tree grows like that by itself. Every one of those arms was a shoot, bent down while it was still green, and tied there — and then tied there again, every summer, for years.

What is an espalier actually a picture of?

A tree that's been trained flat against a support, one shoot at a time, for as long as it's been alive.

The rigid symmetry isn't a drawing style — it's the actual shape of the tree. Each horizontal arm started as an upright shoot that would rather have kept growing skyward, and was instead pulled down to the horizontal and tied off while young wood still bends without splitting. Do that to the same tree, at the same points, for enough summers running, and the result is a shape that reads as architecture before it reads as a plant.

Why bother forcing a tree into a shape it wouldn't choose?

Because flattened against a wall, every part of the tree gets the same light and the same warmth, and none of the fruit ends up out of reach.

An untrained tree shades its own lower branches and puts fruit at the top where it's hardest to pick. Spread the same tree into one plane and every arm gets full sun along its length, air moves freely around the fruit rather than sitting trapped in a canopy, and the whole crop can be picked standing on the ground. It looks ornamental. It was bred by a need to solve a wall, not to decorate one.

What makes the training worth doing well rather than roughly?

Keeping every pair of arms at the same height and the same angle as its neighbours, which is harder than it sounds over several seasons of growth.

A tree trained loosely, with arms at slightly different heights or curving instead of straight, still fruits — it just won't read as trained at a glance, and the whole point of the shape is that it's legible instantly, from a distance, as something somebody has been doing on purpose. The symmetry is the proof of the years, not decoration added on top of them.

Who owns the shape of an espalier?

Nobody. The training method has been common practice on garden walls for centuries, and the flat, tiered shape it produces belongs to no grower, no nursery and no drawing style.

What can be owned is a specific tree — a named fruit variety carries its own protection under plant breeders' rights, separate from the shape it's been trained into. The training itself, on any tree at all, stays free to draw.

Does the same shape work for a different kind of trained plant?

The logic holds for anything being forced into one plane by repeated tying rather than left to grow its own way — a bean wigwam built from straight canes rather than a tangle is doing something related with far less patience involved, since it's taken down again the same year rather than built up over several.

What's specific to an espalier is the time frame: a wigwam is structure for one season, and this is structure that took longer to make than most gardeners keep a single job.

Isn't training a tree like this just for show, given how much easier an untrained one is?

The ease argument runs the other way, once the tree's mature — a trained tree is picked and pruned from the ground, where an untrained one of the same age needs a ladder.

The years of tying are front-loaded work traded for decades of easier work afterwards, the same trade a taut string and two pegs make for a whole row: a small amount of exact effort early, so that everything downstream of it stays simple.
