Somebody decides on Sunday which two days repeat
Three garment shapes above, five tally strokes below splitting into three and two — the week is longer than the supply, and the shortfall gets settled before Monday.

Sage ground. Three identical garment shapes, flat and side by side across the upper half: the left one palest, the middle mid-tone, the right darkest and heaviest. Below them, five plain vertical strokes in a single row — three pale, a wider gap, then two dark ones standing slightly shorter.
Nothing is written anywhere on it. The distance between the two rows is the whole of the arithmetic, and it resolves itself in about a second.
Why are there three shirts above and five marks below?
Because the week is longer than the supply, and that subtraction is what the picture is for.
Five strokes is Monday to Friday, a count nobody gets to negotiate. Three shapes is what the drawer holds. Stack one row over the other on a shared centre line and the shortfall is simply there — two marks at the end with nothing above them. The common axis is doing real work: two rows on the same vertical line read as one comparison, and two rows drifting apart read as two drawings that happen to be on the same chest.
Why do the last two strokes change colour?
Because those are the two days that get a shirt which has already been out once.
Three pale marks match the pale end of the row above. Then the gap widens, and the last two come in dark and a little shorter. The eye does the split before the brain gets involved, which is roughly how long the decision takes at the kitchen table on a Sunday evening: three days are covered by what is clean, and two days are settled some other way.
Why does the row of shirts run palest to darkest?
Because it is the wear order, laid out before the week has started.
The left one goes on first, the right one is at the far end of the run, and the tones step in between. Nothing about it is a claim regarding any specific garment on any specific afternoon — it is a sequence made visible. That is also why the three shapes are identical apart from tone: the difference between them is position in a queue, not size, cut or condition.
Why are there no numbers on it?
Because the sum is meant to be done by looking rather than read.
A printed 3 and a printed 5 would state a result. A row of marks that runs out before the row above it hands the subtraction to whoever is standing in front of the shirt, and they get there faster than they would through digits. It also keeps the design clear of instruction — a figure invites a rule, and there is no rule here, just one household's count.
Is this about uniform, or about the washing machine?
The machine. The shirts are the visible half of a laundry problem.
Three is rarely a number anybody picked for its own sake. It is what one cycle a week supports, what a drying rack holds overnight in February, what a shelf has room for. The binding constraint is drying time, not fabric: something washed late on a Wednesday is not on a body on Thursday morning unless the evening was arranged around it, which is part of why one morning in the week arrives loaded differently from the other four.
Does a plain shirt shape belong to anyone?
No. A flat garment silhouette and five tally strokes are ordinary marks, and nobody licenses either.
There is no crest, no supplier's mark and no name anywhere in the design, which is why it reads as your household rather than as an institution. A real school crest does belong to the school, and schools license it — uniform suppliers hold that permission — so if a genuine crest is the point, obtaining it is part of the job. If it is not the point, an invented version carries the same meaning without the paperwork. Style has no owner. A work does.
Does it work for a different count?
Yes, because the design is a ratio rather than a number.
Four against five, two against five, six pairs of socks against ten sock-days: the shape holds as long as the second row runs out before the first. It sits next to a different problem entirely — a jumper bought a year ahead of the body is measured against growth, while this one is measured against a week — and next to the set that goes in sealed and is counted against nothing at all. A household with five and five has no shortfall to draw and this is not their shirt.
Isn't the obvious answer to buy two more?
For some households it is, and this is a picture of one where it isn't.
Three might be what the budget holds, what the machine supports, or what a shared cupboard has room for. The design records a decision that has already been taken rather than proposing one, which is why the two dark strokes are drawn as a fact instead of a problem. Somebody looked at five days, looked at three shirts, and allocated. The shirt is the allocation.
Does it print well?
Yes — it is close to the simplest thing you can put on cotton and have it survive.
Three flat tones, hard edges, no gradient and no fine detail. The strokes are plain rectangles that hold at any size, and the garment shapes are large enough that the weave never gets a chance to eat an edge. The one thing that has to be right is the vertical alignment: if the two rows drift off their shared centre the comparison collapses and it becomes decoration. Sage, oatmeal and dusty blue all give the pale end somewhere to sit; on a pale garment the lightest shape disappears.
