A grid reference is an agreement, not a measurement
Six digits can pinpoint one hundred-metre square anywhere on a map, because everyone reading them agrees to take them in the same fixed order.

What does a six-figure grid reference actually locate?
One hundred-metre square, out of every square on the sheet.
The whole map is divided into squares numbered along the bottom and up the side — here, the square sits between the lines marked 28 and 29, and between 61 and 62. The six-figure reference subdivides that square further: 284 617 splits it into tenths in both directions and lands on one particular hundred-metre patch of ground within it, which is as precise as the format gets without adding more digits. It says nothing about what that ground looks like — for that you'd need the closed rings of a contour map, a completely different notation answering a completely different question.
Why does the order of the digits matter so much?
Because if it ever varied, the same six digits could mean two different places.
Read along first, then up — always in that order, never the reverse. The first three digits, 284, count in from the 28 line toward 29; the second three, 617, count up from the 61 line toward 62. Swap the halves and you're pointing at a different square entirely. The convention isn't a hint about how to read the number. It's the only thing that makes the number mean anything at all.
Is a hundred-metre square actually precise?
Precise enough to put two people looking for each other within sight of one another, not precise enough to name a single building.
A hundred metres is a size a person can walk across while scanning the ground, which is exactly the job a grid reference is usually asked to do — get you close enough that the last bit is done by eye. Reading more digits off the same grid narrows the square further; six figures is simply the common length, chosen because it's about as much as most people can read aloud and someone else can copy down correctly.
Can this use a real national grid or a real mapping agency's sheet?
No — and this is separate from the usual question about licensing.
A grid reference convention — numbering squares along the bottom and up the side, reading one direction before the other — is a public method. Nobody owns the idea of it, and using it isn't borrowing from anybody. But a specific national mapping agency's own grid is tied to their survey: publishing it under their name and house style asserts that a specific authority surveyed that ground and produced that sheet, and a shirt can't make that assertion on their behalf. Every number in this design is invented for that reason, and no real agency's brand or sheet identity belongs anywhere near it.
Does the same trick work with a made-up coordinate instead of a real place?
Yes, and it works exactly the same way — in the same way a weather station's plot puts every reading in a fixed position around a circle instead of naming it.
The convention doesn't need a real survey behind it to function — any two straight, numbered edges and a rule about reading order produce a working reference. That's what makes an invented grid on a shirt honest rather than a fake: the method is real even when the ground it's describing is not.
Isn't reading along before up just an arbitrary rule?
It's a convention, which is a different thing from arbitrary.
It doesn't matter which direction goes first, only that everybody reading the number agrees on which one does. The value of the rule is entirely in its being fixed and shared — two people with different copies of the same map, who have never spoken to each other, can be certain they mean the same square, which is the same trust a matched pair of ticket halves relies on, built out of agreement instead of a torn edge.
Does it print well?
Yes — straight ruled lines and plain numerals are about as simple as artwork gets.
Keep the grid lines a single flat colour with a hard edge, and set the six-figure reference large enough to read at a glance — that number is the point of the design, not a caption underneath it. Black for the grid and red for the cross and the marked edges is enough; adding more colour only competes with the digits.
