What is this, exactly?

A headstock — the part of the neck that holds the tuning pegs — reduced to a flat silhouette with the strings taken out of it as negative space rather than added on top of it.

There's no timber grain, no finish, no visible hardware beyond the six posts. Just the outline of the shape and six clean cuts through it where the strings would be. It's the least amount of information a guitar can be reduced to and still be unmistakably a guitar.

Why does a headstock's outline matter so much?

Because it's the one part of the instrument recognisable from silhouette alone, with nothing else in frame to help.

A guitar's body shape gets copied constantly and rarely disputed — plenty of makers share close variations. The headstock is different: its outline is often the single most distinctive thing a manufacturer owns, distinctive enough that a small number of well-known shapes have ended up argued over in court between makers. That's precisely why a silhouette of one is such a loaded shape to draw — the outline alone is carrying an identity that a body shape alone usually can't.

Why are the strings cut out instead of drawn on top?

Because drawing them on top would just be decoration, and cutting them out turns the same six lines into the reason the shape reads as an instrument at all.

A solid mass with six gaps in it stops being an abstract silhouette and starts being unmistakably a guitar the moment the gaps line up with where six strings would actually run — the negative space is doing more work than any additional line could. What has no owner is the idea of a headstock, or the general technique of drawing one as a silhouette with the strings cut out — that's a method, not a mark. Does this work for anything other than a guitar?
