Twenty-four faders at uneven heights are one mix
A fader bank's ragged skyline records twenty-four loudness decisions made at once, ending in a bottom mark that isn't a number at all.

Twenty-four channel faders, seen dead-on, each in its own slot. The caps sit at different heights — some pushed near the top, some down near the bottom — so the tops trace a ragged line across the width of the desk. Beside the leftmost fader, a scale: +10, 0, -10, -20, then -∞.
Nobody reading the print knows what any of the twenty-four channels is. The ragged line is the only fact on the shirt, and it's still a complete record of a decision.
What is a fader bank print actually recording?
The relative loudness somebody chose for twenty-four different sound sources, at one moment.
Each fader controls one channel's level against all the others, not its own volume in isolation but its volume relative to whatever the other twenty-three faders are doing. Pushed near the top, a channel dominates; pulled down, it sits underneath everything else. The ragged skyline across the caps isn't random unevenness — it's a snapshot of every one of those twenty-four relationships, decided at once, the same way a numbered patch bay strip is a snapshot of which sockets somebody chose to connect and which they left alone.
Why is -∞ on the scale instead of a number?
Because turning a channel off completely isn't a small amount of something, it's the absence of it.
Every other mark on the scale, +10 down to -20, is a real quantity, a measurable change in how loud a channel is. Below the last of those marks the fader keeps travelling, but the channel stops being a quantity and starts being silent. Minus infinity is the honest way to print that: not a very small number, a different kind of thing than a number at all. It's the one mark on the scale that isn't describing quieter, it's describing gone.
Which channels should actually sit where on the print?
Whichever ones somebody actually mixed, at whatever heights they actually pulled them to.
A fader bank drawn to a tidy, evenly descending curve looks designed rather than used — real mixes are lumpier than that, with one channel pushed hard and its neighbour barely audible for no reason a stranger could guess. The specific, slightly odd skyline of an actual session is the part worth keeping; smoothing it into something more even for the sake of a tidier silhouette throws away the only thing that made it a record of a real decision rather than a diagram of one.
Can a real mixing desk's layout appear on the shirt?
A specific desk's panel design and branding belong to the manufacturer, and licensing that is the ordinary path if a real desk is the point.
Twenty-four plain fader slots and a scale are common to every desk built in the last fifty years — nobody owns a vertical slider next to a number line. What a manufacturer does own is their own knob shapes, their own colour-coding, their own badge on the meter bridge. If the print is meant to be a specific named desk, that permission is part of the job; if it's a mix rather than a model, the generic version says everything that needs saying, and it's also the version nobody else has already worn.
Does this work for a smaller desk, or a home setup with eight channels?
Yes — the skyline scales down with the channel count, it doesn't need twenty-four to make its point.
Eight faders make a shorter, sharper skyline; thirty-two make a longer, gentler one. What has to stay is the unevenness — a flat line of identical heights isn't a mix, it's a fader bank nobody has touched yet, in the way seven pedals in an as-yet-unplayed order aren't a signal chain until somebody's actually run something through them. A single small mixer used for one home recording carries exactly as much information as a full live desk, just compressed into fewer decisions.
Isn't a fader bank meaningless without knowing what's on each channel?
To a stranger, yes, and that's the appeal rather than the flaw.
The print doesn't say which channel is the vocal and which is the kick drum, and it never will, because the labels were never printed on the desk either — they lived on a piece of tape, or in the mixer's head, closer to a sound engineer's own working list than to anything on the panel itself. What survives on the shirt is the shape of the decision without its explanation, which is closer to how the person who pulled those faders actually remembers the session: not as a list of instruments, but as a feeling for where everything sat.
Does it print well?
Yes — vertical rectangles at varying heights and a short numeral scale reproduce cleanly.
The fader caps want to stay simple blocks rather than detailed knob shapes — fine ridges and grip texture are well below the weave's floor and will fill in on fabric. Green for the scale numerals against cream faders on black keeps the fader heights, which are the whole point, the most visible thing on the shirt.
