Print the machine they knew by heart
Retirement gifts default to sentiment about time passing. The ones that land are technical — an exploded parts diagram of the thing they spent thirty years understanding.

The standard retirement gift is about the passage of time — a clock, a card, a shirt with a joke about naps. All of it is addressed to the fact that they're leaving.
The better gift is addressed to what they did. And for a lot of people, what they did was understand one complicated thing completely.
Why a technical diagram?
Because an exploded parts drawing is a portrait of expertise.
Every numbered callout on that shirt is a component somebody had to know: what it does, how it fails, which way it goes back in. To anybody else it's a nice piece of industrial graphics. To the person who worked on that machine, it's a legible document, and they can read it the way you'd read a page of your own handwriting.
That's the whole mechanism. It's a gift that most people in the room can't fully read, which is exactly what makes it feel like it was made for one person.
Does it have to be a machine?
No — it has to be the system they held in their head.
The format generalises further than it looks:
- A machine or vehicle, exploded into parts.
- A wiring or plumbing schematic of a building they maintained.
- A cross-section — a bridge, a hull, a kiln, a printing press.
- A map of the route they drove, flew or walked for twenty years.
- A floor plan of the ward, workshop, kitchen or store.
- A patent-style drawing of the thing they invented or fixed constantly.
Each of these has the same property: it's technical, it's accurate, and it's boring to anyone who wasn't there.
Why does the technical register work better than sentiment?
Because it treats the work as the subject rather than the person's feelings about ending it.
Sentimental retirement gifts put the recipient in an awkward position — they have to perform being moved, usually in front of colleagues. A schematic doesn't ask for that. It just states, in a completely deadpan way, that the thing they spent their life on was complicated and worth documenting.
That's also why the flat drafting style matters. Ruled line, numbered callouts, a figure number, a model designation, no colour. The absence of decoration is the respect. Any warmth added to the drawing weakens it.
What details make it convincing?
Four, and none of them require you to know engineering.
- A figure number — FIG. 8 — implying it came out of a manual with seven other figures.
- A model designation, invented if necessary. Numbers imply a series and a factory.
- Numbered callouts with leader lines, repeated for identical parts, which is what real parts catalogues do.
- Exploded spacing — components floating apart along their assembly axis, in the order they'd come off.
Those conventions are what makes a drawing read as documentation rather than as an illustration of a machine.
Can I use the actual manufacturer's diagram?
The drawing itself is somebody's artwork and the brand names on it are trademarks, so a reproduction isn't yours to print.
The good news is you don't want theirs. A real parts diagram is dense, ugly at chest size, and full of a company's marks. A drawing in that tradition, of their machine, with an invented model number, reads better and belongs to you.
The conventions — exploded views, callouts, figure numbers — are a shared technical language, not anyone's property. It's the same line every era-based style runs on: the tradition is free, the specific artefact isn't.
What if I don't know what the machine looked like?
A photograph of it is enough, and there's usually one.
The identifying features get read from a photo and redrawn in the technical register — the proportions, the shape of the housing, the arrangement of shafts and covers. It doesn't need to be a good photo or a complete one; a phone picture of the thing in situ carries the structure, which is all the drawing needs.
If there's no photo at all, the name of the machine and the trade is usually enough to get something recognisable, and the person receiving it will correct you cheerfully for years.
Isn't this a bit cold for a retirement?
It reads as the opposite, in practice, and that's worth trusting.
The warmth is in the fact that somebody bothered to find out what the machine was called. Nobody gets a gift like this by accident — it requires knowing what the work actually was, which is more than most retirement gifts demonstrate.
And it survives the party: it's a technical print on a plain garment, wearable in a workshop forever. The gift that gets worn beats the gift that gets thanked for.
