Why is the brush worn on one side rather than evenly all round?

Because it only ever meets the kerb from one direction, run after run, on a route the vehicle drives the same way each time.

A gutter brush spins, but the vehicle it's mounted on consistently has the kerb on the same side of the road as it works — so one edge of the disc takes all the real contact, and the rest barely touches anything but loose debris. Swap the vehicle to the other side of the road, as it would on a different country's streets, and the bevel would form on the opposite edge instead. The bevel isn't the brush wearing badly. It's the brush wearing exactly the way a part built for this one job would wear.

Why does that count as a record rather than as damage?

Because damage is random and this isn't — the bevel is the same shape a thousand identical passes would produce, and nothing else.

A part that's been struck, jammed or misused wears unevenly in a way that doesn't repeat. This one wears the same few degrees of angle, the same side, the same taper, every time, because the geometry of the vehicle and the kerb doesn't change. That regularity is what turns wear into a record instead of a fault — the same logic behind a service book carrying a stamp for every visit rather than one summary of the car's condition.

Why does street sweeping happen at night rather than during the day?

Because two things that make daytime sweeping impractical mostly disappear after dark: parked cars and moving traffic.

During the day, the kerb line the brush needs to reach is blocked by parked cars for most of its length, and a slow vehicle working the gutter is itself an obstruction in traffic. At night, the cars that would block the kerb are still there, but the traffic that would queue behind a slow sweeper mostly isn't — enough of a difference to make the run practical. It's less that night is better and more that night is when the two obstacles that matter are both at their smallest, which is also why the route and the hour rarely change from one week to the next.

Can a real fleet's brush code or livery go on a shirt?

Not the livery — a real operator's fleet marking and colours belong to that operator, the way any company identity does.

A stamped part code like GB-450 is closer to a generic manufacturer's numbering convention than to a brand mark, and an invented one does the same descriptive job without borrowing anyone's actual fleet number. The bevel itself — what any gutter brush looks like after enough kerb-side runs — isn't anyone's property to begin with.

Does reading a part by its wear rather than its part number apply beyond a gutter brush?

Anywhere a component takes the same repeated contact in the same direction, the wear becomes more informative than the label stamped on it — a mechanic identifying a fault by touch and wear rather than by looking up a part number is the same skill applied to a different set of parts.

A worn cutting edge, a chain's stretched links, a boot sole's heel strike — all readable the same way, by somebody who's seen enough of them to know what ordinary wear looks like against this one.

Isn't a half-worn-down part a strange thing to want printed on a shirt?

No — the wear is proof the part did its job, not evidence it failed at it.

A brush that came off the machine untouched would mean the vehicle hadn't done a proper run yet. This one did enough of them to reshape itself, which is closer to a badge of use than to a fault report. The bevel says the machine worked, on this route, for a long time — which is exactly what somebody who runs that route wants a shirt to say.

Does the worn brush print well?

Yes — a cutaway line drawing is built for exactly this kind of technical subject, and it survives fabric better than a photograph would.

Cream carries the bristle disc and the hub as clean outline work; the single yellow is reserved for the bevel itself, so the eye goes straight to the one detail the whole print exists to show. Keep the stamped code small and legible rather than decorative — a real stamp reads slightly crooked and over-inked, and that texture is worth keeping even at reduced size.
