In a 200, the third lap is the slow one

What is a lap split sheet actually recording?
The shape of a swim, not just its finishing time.
A 200 is four lengths, and a total on its own hides what happened between the walls — whether the swimmer went out too fast, held even, or fell apart and recovered. The four splits, read in order, show the pacing decision as it was actually made, lap by lap, rather than the single number a results board would print.
Why is the third lap usually the slowest one?
Because it's the point furthest from both the dive and the finish, with nothing left to borrow from either.
The first lap runs fast off a dive that hasn't cost anything yet. The last lap gets faster again because the finish is close enough to see and the body finds something for it. The middle two carry the accumulated fatigue with no adrenaline boost from either end, and the third is usually the worst of the two — 27.8, then 30.4, then 31.1, before the sheet's own fourth lap comes back down to 30.2. That shape isn't this swimmer's problem. It's what a 200 does to almost anybody who swims it fairly.
What makes a good split sheet to have printed?
Whether the shape it shows is actually earned — a real race, or a real training set, rather than four numbers arranged to look tidy.
A perfectly even split sheet reads as a training exercise, not a race, because racing a 200 well usually means accepting some fade in the middle two laps rather than trying to erase it. The interesting sheet is the one with a genuine dip and a genuine recovery, because that's the actual argument the swimmer had with the third length, not a flattering rewrite of it.
Can a real swim meet's name or record go on the sheet?
If a specific meet or club is the point, get the organiser's or club's permission — meet names and club badges are licensed for merchandise routinely.
Where the meet isn't the point and the four numbers are, an invented sheet carries the shape just as well, since nobody owns the fact that a 200 slows in the middle and picks up at the end. What no licence can grant is a title the swimmer didn't earn — a sheet dressed up as a certified record or a qualifying time is a different claim entirely, and one an organiser's permission doesn't cover.
Does this work for a distance other than a 200, or a relay leg?
The four-part shape is specific to a 200. Other distances have their own version of the same idea.
A 100 collapses to two splits and loses the middle entirely; a longer individual medley or distance swim spreads the same fade-and-recover logic across more laps rather than exactly four. A relay leg works differently again — one swimmer's single split sitting inside somebody else's total, which is a different kind of record: a rowing eight has the same problem of one person's effort folded into a shared result, just solved by seating order instead of a stopwatch.
Isn't slowing down in the middle something a swimmer would rather not put on a shirt?
Not if the numbers are read correctly — the dip isn't a mistake, it's what the third lap of a fairly raced 200 looks like.
A sheet with four identical splits would actually be the odd one, either an easy training swim or a race gone out too cautiously to fade at all. 30.4 into 31.1 into 30.2 is the ordinary shape of effort spent honestly across four lengths, the same way a break in snooker is written down as the sequence of decisions it actually was, not tidied into a single final score.
Does a split sheet print well?
Yes — four short figures in a ruled column, one circled, is a clean layout at any size.
Keep the ruling as a thin flat line rather than a printed table border, since a heavy grid starts competing with the numbers it's meant to organise. The circle around 31.1 should stay a genuine hand-drawn ring rather than a perfect printed ellipse — an even ring reads as decoration, a slightly uneven one reads as marked in the moment. One yellow, kept to that circle and the total rule, is enough against deep teal.
