The one grey square gives the whole room away
A plain interior pushed entirely toward one sour yellow-green, with a single small patch left correct in a lower corner so the cast becomes visible against it.

A wall, a skirting board, a closed door with a round handle. Nothing else in the room.
Every surface reads the same sour yellow-green, wall and door and all — even the parts that should be plain white.
In the lower corner, one small square sits apart from the rest: flat, cool, correct grey.
Nothing in the room is wrong. The picture of the room is wrong, all of it, in exactly one direction.
Why does everything in the room read the same colour, down to the white?
Because the cast isn't on any one surface — it's on the whole picture, applied once, after the fact.
A single object can be genuinely that colour. A whole interior can't: paint, wood and a door handle don't naturally agree on a hue, and white in particular has no colour of its own to begin with. When every one of them drifts toward the same yellow-green together, including the white, that agreement is the tell. Nothing this consistent happens to a real room. It happens to a picture of one.
Why is there a small correct patch, and why does it sit in the corner rather than the middle?
Because a cast this uniform is invisible without something known-correct standing next to it.
The eye adjusts to whatever light is dominant and reports the room as looking normal — that's true of an actual room lit by one bad bulb, and it's just as true of a picture nobody has corrected. The only way to see the shift is to put a genuinely neutral grey beside it and let the two disagree. A corner keeps that reference out of the way of the room itself, present but not staged, which is closer to how such a patch would actually turn up: tucked in, not centred for display.
How is this different from two colours becoming one identical grey?
The two aren't the same kind of loss. Two distinct colours can collapse into a single indistinguishable grey, and once that happens the original difference is gone — there's no reference left that could tell you what either one used to be.
A cast is not that kind of damage. Every value in this room is still there, just consistently pushed one direction, and the correct patch proves it: it's the same grey the walls would be if the shift were undone. The information survives. It's only unreadable until something beside it disagrees.
Who owns an interior like this?
Nobody. The room, the door and the patch were all invented for the design and belong to no real building.
Colour management going wrong is a mechanism, not a work — it happens to real photographs constantly and no drawing of the effect copies anyone's specific room. Where an actual space is the point — a particular flat, a particular office — that's someone's real interior and permission for it is obtainable, the way any interior photograph's use is. Where it isn't the point, the invented room does the job better, because a door and a skirting board that identify no address let the cast be the whole story. Style has no owner. A work does.
Does this happen with anything other than an interior?
Yes, anywhere a scene is lit and recorded under one light source that isn't neutral: a plate of food shot under a warm bulb, a face under a coloured sign, a whole shopfront under sodium light.
What has to hold is the pairing — everything shifted together, and one small area that didn't. A different kind of colour failure altogether shows up in a bowl of fruit missing one printing plate entirely: there a whole channel simply never got laid down. Here nothing is missing, every channel is present, only tilted.
Isn't a colour cast basically invisible — is there really a design in it?
On its own, yes, which is exactly why the patch has to be there. Without it, the room just reads as a room with an unusual paint colour, and the whole point disappears.
With it, the eye does the comparison in under a second: this square is grey, so that wall is not actually this colour, and the gap between them is the design. A different kind of two-systems collision does the same work through geometry rather than colour in a display photographed at a slight angle to itself — there the tell is a pattern belonging to neither grid; here it's a swatch belonging to neither the room nor the shift.
Does it print well?
Yes, and it wants a short, flat palette rather than a blended one — the whole point is that every tone in the room shares the same push, so a soft gradient toward the middle would blur the effect instead of showing it.
Moss, olive and a deep mustard all suit the ground, since the shift reads immediately against fabric already leaning that direction; a corrected grey patch prints as one flat, slightly desaturated square with a hard edge, never a vignette. Keep the door handle and skirting line as simple outlines rather than fine detail — anything finer than that closes up in the weave and the room stops reading as a room.
