It is looking where the boat is going

It is looking where the boat is going. It will not look at you.

Why is the pupil not in the middle of the eye?

Because a pupil in the middle meets whoever is standing in front of it, and this one is turned to the front of the boat.

Slide the disc into the forward corner of the almond and the sightline leaves the hull at an angle, out past the stem post and along the water ahead. Centre it and the eye returns your look across the quay. Two different objects, made with the same three shapes, a brush-width apart.

The rest follows from that placement: the lids taper to a point at the aft corner so the almond leans forward, and the pupil crowds the corner instead of floating clear of it. Get the disc wrong and no amount of surrounding detail recovers it.

How can a flat painted eye have a direction?

Because the bow is drawn in three-quarter view, so the hull's own direction is already on the page before the eye is read.

A side elevation gives you a boat pointing left or right with equal conviction, and a head-on view flattens the eye into a sliver. Turned three-quarters, the stem post comes forward and the planking runs back into the panel, so the direction of travel is a fact about the drawing rather than something the viewer supplies. The eye is read against that fact.

Why is the eye cleaner than the boat it is painted on?

Because the two are kept up on different schedules, and the gap between them shows.

The planking is chalky and broken, worn back to the ground colour in long patches. The eye's outline and pupil are unbroken and hard-edged. Paint on a working hull weathers at much the same rate wherever it sits, so a solid eye on a broken hull is not a fact about paint. It is a fact about which mark somebody went back over.

Going over an eye is a few minutes with a small brush and whatever tin is aboard. Going over the hull is the boat out of the water and a day gone. This print is the moment part-way between — sound eye, spent planking, both true at once.

Why is it on the bow and not the side?

Because the bow is the part of the boat that arrives first.

Every mark a small working boat carries sits forward: the name, the port number, the registration. The eye takes the same position and the same paint, high on the planking where the hull is still climbing towards the stem, which is why it reads as part of the boat rather than something applied to it. It sits where the vessel meets what it is going into, the position this kind of fitting keeps turning up in.

The line weight matches the hull's other lines and the blue is the blue already aboard, which puts the mark in a different category from gear that came aboard off a stall with a tag tied to it. This one was made on the boat, by whoever had the boat.

Who owns an eye painted on a boat?

Nobody. An almond outline with a disc in it is a geometric construction, and there is no author to ask.

What does have an owner is the record of a particular one: a photograph of an identifiable working boat belongs to the photographer, a measured drawing in a published survey to whoever made the survey, a named fleet's livery to the fleet. All of it is licensable, and if a specific vessel is the point, that permission is part of the job.

If it is not the point, the paperwork buys you nothing. An invented bow is the better object anyway, because the drawing can be built around the pupil placement instead of inheriting whatever a real hull happened to do. Style has no owner. A work does.

Does this work on something that is not a boat?

Yes — the device needs a front and a direction of travel, and plenty of things have both.

A van, a plough, a bicycle, a machine that feeds one way: put the eye where the object leads, push the pupil into the leading corner, and the same reading arrives. What breaks it is a static mount, where there is no course to look along and the eye falls back to meeting the viewer — the difference between a mark fitted to a working object and the same shape made to be hung up.

Does it print well?

Yes, and it is close to the simplest thing you can ask a garment to hold: one ink on an undyed ground.

The deep blue is one flat colour throughout and the weathering is drawn as gaps in it rather than as a grey wash, so there is no soft blend anywhere to go muddy on cotton. The gaps want to be coarser and fewer than a real worn hull would show, since speckle finer than the weave fills in and turns the panel into a block. The eye's outline and pupil stay solid, which is what carries the print across a room. Ecru, oatmeal or bleached sand; the print's edge is the hull's own outline running off the bottom of the panel, with no rectangle round it.
