The old hem is still there, a few centimetres down

What are the two lines on the leg?

The lower, fainter one is where the trousers were originally hemmed at the factory. The upper, stitched one is where they're hemmed now.

Cloth remembers a fold. Press a crease into fabric and wear it for long enough, and the fibres set along that line even after the fold is undone — which is exactly what happens when a hem is taken up: the fabric is turned to a new, shorter length, but the old crease from the factory hem doesn't disappear. It just stops being where the trousers actually end.

Why does the stitching wander instead of running straight?

Because it was sewn by eye, by a hand following a chalk line rather than a machine following a guide.

A machine hem is mechanically even — the same stitch length, the same distance from the fold, for the entire run. A hand running stitch depends on how the person holding the needle judged distance each time they pushed it through, which drifts a little with every few stitches even when the sewer is careful. That drift is legible as effort rather than as a fault: it holds the hem exactly as well as a straight line would, and it looks like nothing a factory would allow.

Why does the chalk mark say UP instead of being erased?

Because chalk is designed to be brushed off before the garment is finished, and here it wasn't — it was left as part of the object rather than removed as a step of making it.

Tailor's chalk exists to mark where cloth should be worked and then vanish once the work is done. Leaving the mark in place turns a working instruction into a record of the instruction being followed — proof that somebody, at some point, stood over this exact leg and told themselves which way to fold it.

Why is a hem taken up rather than let out?

Both directions happen, and this one just happens to be the more common of the two.

Trousers usually come from the factory longer than most people need, cut to a standard length that gets adjusted down at the point of sale or afterwards by hand. Letting a hem out is the same process run in reverse, and it leaves the same kind of evidence — an old crease, this time closer to the new hem than the factory one was, showing how much length was recovered rather than removed.

Does this only work on trousers?

The mechanism — a garment that used to be a different length, with the old length still visible — applies wherever a hem exists, but trousers are where it shows up most, because they're the garment altered most often and discussed least.

A trouser leg is the same decision a sleeve makes, run at a different scale: a length chosen once, permanently, that leaves the discarded length as evidence somewhere on the garment. Sleeves get cut off and kept as an object beside the shirt. A trouser hem folds its discarded length under itself and stitches it there instead.

Why hand-stitch a hem instead of taking it to be machined?

Because a hand hem can be undone and adjusted again later without unpicking a machine seam, and because it doesn't need access to a machine at all.

A machine hem is faster and more even, but it commits the cloth to that exact fold. A running stitch by hand holds the fold well enough for daily wear while staying loose enough to unpick with a seam ripper and redo — closer, in spirit, to a seam mended in whatever thread was in the tin than to a factory finish, which is a trade-off some people are making on purpose rather than settling for. It's the same kind of adjustment, made by the same kind of hand, as a belt hole punched wherever the body actually needed it — neither one waits for a machine to catch up with what changed.

Does it print well?

Yes, provided the two hem lines stay clearly different weights.

This is a two- or three-tone print: warm sand cloth, a slightly darker line for the wandering hand stitches, and the faintest possible line for the old factory crease — it should read as barely there, not as a second hem competing with the real one. The chalk word and arrow can sit in a single flat tone; chalk doesn't have gradients to lose in the first place.
