Why draw over a scale that already exists?

Because the printed scale asks to be read, and the drawn line doesn't.

The graduations sit close together, in small type, on a curved surface — a task that gets harder in poor light or at an early hour. A single thick line, drawn once, removes the search afterward. There is one thing to find on the barrel instead of several nearly identical ones.

Isn't the drawn line just repeating what the printed tick already shows?

No — they're two different objects doing two different jobs.

The printed scale is manufactured onto every unit that leaves the factory, identical across all of them. The drawn line exists on this one syringe only, added by hand for this specific situation. It doesn't translate the printed scale so much as stand in for the act of reading it.

Why show the plunger's stopper as a separate mark from the line?

Because they are separate things, and drawing them as one would misrepresent the object.

The line is fixed to the barrel — it doesn't move once it's drawn. The stopper belongs to the plunger, a part that slides. Keeping them visually apart in the drawing is simply accurate: one is a reference added to the outside of the barrel, the other is a moving part of the syringe itself.

What makes a good drawing of this?

The printed graduations should stay fine and pale, close to illegible at a glance — that's true to how small they actually are. The drawn line should read as unmistakably hand-added: thick, single- stroke, in a colour that has no other job anywhere else on the print. If the two marks look like they were made by the same hand, the drawing has lost its own point.

A moulded score line that promises four equal pieces and mostly delivers them runs on the same idea from the other side — a printed feature doing most of the job, with a household supplying the rest by hand.

Who else benefits from a mark like this, beyond whoever drew it?

Anyone else in the house who needs to use the same syringe without first learning to read the printed scale.

A line drawn once becomes something a second person can follow on sight, the same way a strip of tape up the side of a bowl turns an ordinary object into something anyone can read at a glance. Both are small, home-made instruments built so the knowledge doesn't live in only one person's head.

Do I need permission to draw a syringe like this?

No, if it's a plain oral syringe with no manufacturer's branding, colour or printed logo.

A generic barrel and plunger, with graduations rendered as generic tick marks rather than a specific company's printed scale, isn't anyone's product design — it's the plain shape a syringe takes. Actual branded packaging or a manufacturer's own printed artwork would be a different matter, and would belong to whoever made it.

Does the print show what the syringe is filled to?

No — it shows a mark and the reason somebody made it, not a quantity.

What the line was set to on this or any syringe isn't something the print states, and isn't something to work out from it. That's a question for whoever prescribed what the syringe is for, not for a drawing of a barrel. Does it print well?

Yes — the whole design rests on one clear weight contrast, which survives reduction better than fine detail does.

Keep the printed graduations thin and light — they're meant to almost disappear — against one thick, solid drawn line in a single strong ink. Chalk white, pale grey or bone all sit well behind it, since the syringe itself carries most of the contrast on its own.
