More running time, paid for in picture

A two-position switch drawn already thrown, with two bars underneath as the only argument it ever makes, and a household that chose the softer picture without calling it a choice.

What does a switch like this do?

It changes how fast the tape moves, and so how much of an evening fits on one.

A video recorder pulled its tape past a fixed point at a set speed. Slow that speed and the same length of tape lasts longer — the two figures on the shirt are the two answers it offered. What you pay is that everything recorded gets written into less physical room, so it comes back softer, with less detail in it than the thing that went in.

That is the whole mechanism, and it is why the control has two positions instead of a dial. There was no middle to negotiate. You were either fitting one film comfortably or fitting a long evening at a price.

Why is it drawn already in one position?

Because the design records a decision rather than offering one.

A switch drawn dead centre, or drawn twice, would be a diagram asking you to pick. This one is hard over to the right, and its knob is the only saturated colour anywhere on the garment, which puts all the weight on where it ended up rather than on how it works.

And it ended up there permanently in a lot of houses. A two-position switch gets moved once, early, by whoever was closest to it, and then nobody looks at it again for years. Every recording made afterwards inherits that position, including the ones made by people who never knew there was a switch to look at.

What are the two bars underneath arguing?

That one setting gets you more room than the other, and that is the entire case it makes.

The bars are crude on purpose: a shorter grey one with 180 at its end, a longer yellow one with 360 at its end. Nothing about picture quality appears anywhere in the graphic. The gain is drawn and the cost is not, which is a fair reproduction of how the choice presented itself on the front of a machine.

Read the figures as figures. The bars under them are a shorter one and a longer one, drawn so the comparison lands from across a room rather than to be measured against each other with a ruler. The real relationship is in the two numbers, not in the lengths.

Why would a house choose the softer picture?

Because more room solved a problem in front of them and softness did not.

Running out of tape before the end of something — the last few minutes missing — is immediate and infuriating. A slightly less detailed picture is a thing you stop noticing by the second viewing. Given those two, plenty of households took the room, and took it once at the switch rather than deciding again every time.

Which is worth being clear about: it was not a mistake. The copy existed to be watched, repeatedly, in a lit room, on a set across from a sofa, and what went missing was mostly detail nobody was looking for. The loss that did eventually show was wear, and a copy that got softer every time it went through had started from further down.

Do the words on this print belong to anybody?

No. STANDARD and LONG are ordinary English words used as labels here, and no maker is named anywhere on the garment.

There is no badge, no housing, no model number, nothing identifying a particular machine. A slide switch with two labelled ends is generic industrial control design, the same category as a light switch, and the figures are figures.

The wider position for this material: films and titles belong to whoever made them and are licensable, so where a real one is genuinely the point, getting the permission is part of the job rather than a reason not to make the thing — and the recognisable version is the shirt a thousand people already own. The setting your household chose, the tape you filled, the way you did it: those are already yours. Style has no owner. A work does.

Is this readable to somebody who never used one of these machines?

Yes, because the shape of the trade-off is older and wider than the machine is.

A slider between two labelled ends, with a quantity bar under each, is a picture anybody can read cold. One side gives you less of something and the other gives you more, and the knob is sitting on one of them. You do not need to know what is being stored to know that somebody chose quantity.

That is also why it travels. Anyone who has set a capture quality, chosen a compression, sized a print run or traded fuel against payload reads it instantly, and reads the same shape in it: a setting that stopped being a decision the day it was made. For a household it holds too — the switch belonged to the room, and the tape it was thrown for came out of a pack of three still in its wrapper that belonged to everybody.

Does it print well?

Very. It is flat colour with hard edges and no gradient anywhere in it.

A hollow rounded track, one filled knob, two solid bars and four short pieces of type: nothing here sits below what a weave can hold, and nothing depends on a soft transition. The thing worth protecting is the gap between the track's outline and the knob, which keeps it reading as a control rather than as a filled pill with a line round it.

Faded slate blue, washed indigo and dusty olive all give the yellow somewhere to sit. Two inks do it — a bone white for the track, the labels and the shorter bar, and a single acid yellow for the knob, the longer bar and its figure. A slightly broken, speckled ink surface suits the subject and survives the weave better than a solid flood.
