Twenty-nine, then twenty-ten — a rule that's almost right
A row of chalk numerals climbs to twenty-nine, then invents twenty-ten — a made-up number that proves he worked out the pattern rather than memorised the list.

Chalk-white numerals climb across the chest in an unsteady hand: 26, 27, 28, 29. Then, in the same hand, the same size, with total confidence: TWENTY TEN. The figures wander off the baseline and one of them is drawn back-to-front.
He didn't run out of numbers. He ran out of the name for the next one, built a replacement out of the pattern he'd already worked out, and got it almost right.
Why is TWENTY TEN a good mistake instead of a wrong one?
Because it shows he'd worked out the actual shape of the counting pattern and applied it correctly — he just landed on the wrong word for the next tens group.
Getting from twenty-one to twenty-nine by adding one to the end each time is a rule, and he's using it correctly right up to twenty-nine. TWENTY TEN is what that same rule produces if you don't yet know that the tens word changes at thirty. That's not a gap in his counting; it's the rule being followed one step further than his vocabulary currently covers.
Why does this particular mistake turn up so often?
Because English asks a counting child to do two different things at once, and only tells them about one of them.
Climbing from twenty-one through twenty-nine, the pattern is: keep the same tens word, change the last digit. Nothing in that stretch warns a child that at the next boundary the tens word itself has to change too, to an unrelated new word. Yes — a tidied, evenly spaced set of numerals would just be a number; the wobble is what shows the number being worked out live.
Why cleaning it up would lose the point
The wandering baseline and the reversed figure aren't errors sitting on top of the idea — they're evidence that this is a hand still building the system, not copying a finished one. A designer's instinct with uneven numerals is to straighten them into something more legible. Here, legibility was never the goal. The moment TWENTY TEN got written down, in that hand, at that size, is the entire reason to print it.
Does printing a child's own numbers need anyone's permission?
No — it's his own working, written by his own hand, and there's nothing here borrowed from anyone else to license.
The consideration worth keeping in mind is the same one that applies to a name still finding its own shape: eventually he'll be old enough to see this record of an earlier version of himself and have a view on it. Most children are glad to see it kept exactly as written. Asking, once he's able to answer, costs nothing.
Does this work for a different rule he's still getting almost right?
Yes — any point where he's clearly applying a system rather than guessing at random works the same way, counting or otherwise.
Skip counting, the days of the week in the wrong order but the right rhythm, a list spelled exactly as he says the words — all of these show the same thing TWENTY TEN shows: a working method, mid-construction. What the design needs is a specific, dated example of the reasoning, not a general claim that he's clever.
Shouldn't this be corrected before it goes on a shirt?
No — correcting it is somebody else's job on some other day; this shirt's job is to record where his own reasoning had got to.
This isn't a design about teaching him to count properly, and it isn't a chart for practising the missing word. The parent's part here is watching, not instructing — how he measures time in units of his own making runs on the same logic, and the print is a record of that private system, not a correction of it.
Does it print well?
Yes — chalk-style lettering is a flat, hard-edged mark, and one ink keeps a wandering baseline looking intentional rather than smudged.
Chalk-white on charcoal is a single colour with strong contrast, which is what an uneven row of numerals needs to stay legible without a gradient softening the edges. Keep the spacing between digits exactly as uneven as it was written; evening it out under production would flatten the one detail that makes this a specific afternoon rather than a font.
